Hi
I’m preparing the move from the very old Kongat r40270M to current BS r50146.
I’ve read about problems on r50176. Is the r50146 the last “well working” one ?
I read about "many" new features and fixes been added year after year….
I Kindly ask
1* Are there new feature/menus that I will HAVE TO configure in new version, compared with current 40270M ?
2* Or new features that you suggest me to activate ?
3* I'm also using the USB&NAS module , as well as the broadband connection module. Any big change in these modules, that need a different configuration ?
4* Is just advised (or needed?) a simple “After flashing, reset to default settings” , or it is NEEDED a telnet “nvram erase && reboot” BEFORE installation ? I'm afraid that with such erase "before" install, will I loose current admin password and current network mask, so I will not be able to reach the router, log in and perform a GUI firmware update...
5* Is there a script that will transfer nvram variable from one version to another ? I’m thinking about a bash script in server side, or a selenium script on client side….
Thanks in advance for you help

Many (security) fixes indeed, latest build as of today is 50176.
Before upgrade make screenshots of old settings and copy what you can copy.
Upgrade and *after* upgrade reset to defaults either with reset button, from GUI or with "nvram erase && reboot"
I use the latter method but that is just out of habit
Put settings in manually never restore from a backup (to a different build)
Do not reset, leave dropdown alone during webUI firmware upgrade then nvram erase && rebootafter upgrade.
Before upgrade you may want to take screenshots, or valid webpage saves, as well as log "nvram show" output.
I do not see any real problems with r50176 (webUI sorting does not count) but can always wait for next release.

Firmware Type VANILLA in Advanced Settings for wlan0 & wlan1.
Lots of settings are being preserved by easyddup which aren't used any longer. I found settings for bridges which I don't use any longer. They were in use earlier, but superseded. They're not in the GUI. Likely not easyddup's fault, but I wonder about the usefulness of those settings files. Probably best used alongside screen dumps of all GUI pages from top to bottom and opening up all that can be opened up. Very tedious and error prone.
I have not endeavored rebuilding all settings from scratch for a very long time, but seeing those old settings interspersed increases the pressure to attempt to do so ... One can always go back to a working GUI backup after all ...
I must say not resetting nvram on update hasn't failed me, yet ... not yet ....

I have no excuse for not having thought of this myself, apart perhaps from never having had an actual printer.
It is amazing. You don't even have to think of names to store the files.
Plus you can copy the original text from text fields in the PDF file. Amazing!
I already finished printing all relevant pages. It's that easy compared to screen dumps.
What is doesn't do is print the SSH keys, but that's probably good for security. They may well be in the easyddup backups. There were many lines of gibberish that looked like a security key of sorts.
Im in a very similar situation wherein I want to upgrade from an ancient build of Kong (34175 from 2017) to the current betas for my R7800.
When people say upgrade, am i suppose to go back to Netgear firmware first from my Kong build, before flashing the latest beta, or can I do it directly via a Web upgrade, and then reset to defaults and then restore settings?
Sorry, its been a while with ddwrt for me and hence forgot most of the basic stuff to get this done.

You do not have to go back to stock.
If you do not use JFFS2 a reset *before* upgrading is not necessary although it does not hurt, you are coming from a very old build so I would also reset before upgrading, make screenshots ( you can print to pdf) before resetting.
Upgrade to the a recent build (latest as of today is 50595).
