Hi,
I just bought a brand new Netgear XR500, which seems now bricked.
I followed the famous tutorial to install DD-WRT (under windows 11) : https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=320614
but maybe I made a mistake I don't know.
I saved the partitions from mtd0 to mtd18 (so mtd6), maybe it can help.

The only difference I see is :
- I did not reset to default Netgear GUI, as I just installed the router, entered compulsory admin password and wifi SSID settings (initial netgear firmware 2.3.2.56)
- I directly tried the last r50176 factory-to-DD-wrt image (it warned me with downgrading to V2.3.2.40).
- I let the USB stick plugged while installing DD-wrt (oops)

When I uploaded the firmware, the connection cut (classic), then now I only have 2 led :
- The USB2 LED, white ON;
- The Ethernet where my computer is plugged in (blinked "White" when connection is ON, fixed "Orange" when OFF)

NO POWER LED at all.
Netgear TFTP procedure doesn't seem to work, as I don't have any orange power LED blinking to start uploading the firmware :
https://kb.netgear.com/000059633/How-do-I-upload-firmware-to-my-NETGEAR-router-using-a-TFTP-client-on-Microsoft-Windows

"nmrpflash -L" doesn't respond anything.

Ping from Static 192.168.1.10 to 192.168.1.1 answers me : "impossible to join the destination"

I don't know what to do
Can you help me ? Crying or Very sad

I don't know at all, really the first time, so if you have some informations...thanks

I followed that guide.

Sorry... there is NO POWER LED at all... it doesn't answer to ping AT ALL.
TFTP doesn't see anything AT ALL.
I don't know if my FT232 chip works (It appears under windows devices), but I don't see anything on the Kitty/Putty console or hyperterminal. I don't know what I'm supposed to see, nothing appears.

And I'm not a network nor an electrician specialist.
dd-wrt update was supposed to work. It's really impossible for me to spend 15 days to solve that thing.
Even if I want it it's completely impossible to me, I need a specialist.
When I turn it on, the router doesn't seem to boot or do anything. Just 2 led appear instantly (usb and ethernet), and that's all.

DD-WRT, $200 thrown out in 1 click, wonderful. Rolling Eyes

Okay not following the guide no reset or disconnect USB and of course backup mtd is optional. Cannot enter tftp mode?

Press and hold the reset button and power up the router. Start the TFTP when ping replies with TTL...easier, wait till the
power led starts flashing white at least 10 times after flashing orange and then release the reset button and start TFTP.

Hold reset power on 10 sec led blinks white release.

Put a paperclip (or any other small object) in the reset hole and turn on the router. Keep pressing the reset button until
the power led (most left light) turns from orange to blinking white. The router is now in tftp mode.

I have yet to try nmrpflash on R7800 or XR500, but my experience with R7000 was fairly straightforward.
This sounds like the ethernet adapter misconfigured or maybe nmrpflash is not installed correctly (Npcap).

I did not reset but after resetting it would be the same thing : to get the firmware update page, I have to enter an admin password and Wifi settings... that's the only things I entered before updating to dd-wrt.

TFTP doesn't see anything,
The strange thing is that the Power LED NEVER lights on, whatever I do : Only USB and ethernet led (where the computer is plugged) instantly light on when I turn on the router. And nothing else.
Physical reset doesn't do anything at all...

For "nmrpflash -L", I just launched it on 2 Windows PC (nothing to install), it never returns anything.

You disconnected everything, but power and one LAN Ethernet, from the router especially USB?
"whatever I do" includes above steps to hold reset before and during power on for 10 seconds?
This is very a different method than standard router reset after power on and enters tftp mode.

This is wrong. Please see the instructions to install nmrpflash for Windows properly, with Npcap.

I tried the 10sec method, or the 30/30/30 method, the Power LED NEVER lights on, NEVER.
Same issue with the internet LED, or Wifi 2,4 Ghz LED, or Wifi 5Ghz LED. They NEVER turn on.
The reset button has no effect at all.
I just checked, when I turn on the router (with or without reset), an USB led and all the LAN Led flash 1 time, then the free LAN led turn off definitely. Only stays the usb led, and the lan port plugged led (this last one flashes).
The strange thing is that the Power LED never lights, as if there was no boot.

Thanks for your help, I didn't saw the npcap requirement.Embarassed
I tried that following command on an genuine netgear .img file, with the Windows net8 interface on DHCP settings (then static 192.168.1.20 IP), with or without the -a and -A part :

Code:
nmrpflash -v -i net8 -f XR500-V2.3.2.56.img -t 10000 -T 10000 -A 192.168.1.20 -a 192.168.1.1

Allways the same answer :

Waiting for the Ethernet connection
Adding 192.168.1.20 to interface net8
Advertising NMRP server on net8
No response after 60 seconds. Bailing out.

Put a switch between the router and Windows. That will keep the Ethernet connection up on Windows while the router is powered down.

Well, sorry to say this is very likely a hardware failure. BTW never 30-30-30. Before or after boot 7 to 10 sec once.
So your best bet is trying to RMA this router to Netgear ASAP, otherwise USB to TTL serial com port settings YMMV.

"The power LED stays off no matter what you do, the internet lights remain off but the USB & ETH LEDs are on (only
the ETH LED that has an Ethernet cable plugged in to)"

"spoke to customer support (somehow found a number for them) - they seemed to conclude that this is a hardware
issue and as it is covered by the 2 years hardware issue, they will let me complete an RMA." TLDR Netgear support.

yep consider your deviations(mistakes) from the official flash guide, it smells like hardware issue if there is no TFTP response...
either return the unit chase the case "hardware failure guarantee" or try serial...

and always follow guides as they say..spend, some time reading, it pays back...

no idea about W11 connectivity, but it's sounds bad idea to flash via W11...or chrome based browser...it could be the bugger too..

to me it sounds like a bad flash...so, serial makes miracles... Rolling Eyes

Remember to never connect the 5V line and some adapters are finicky some cases connect ground after power on.
If no activity in PuTTY with good drivers, and correct com port settings both Windows and PuTTY, try Netgear RMA.

Given that these are known to have problems caused by bad blocks I wonders if this is another possible result.

Thanks everybody for you answers Wink Much appreciated

I read somewhere on the forum the switch trick, but it doesn't seem to change anything.
The main thing that makes me think it could be a big issue is that the Power led never turns on, never, never.

blkt wrote:

You're probably right, RMA will be the best thing to do.

I'm really not sure it's the deviations from the tutorial, maybe to let the USB plugged in during the flash, or a not appropriate firmware release, I don't know.
I updated it using Firefox or Edge I don't remember (before I used IE, but not available anymore under Windows 11). I read that Chrome was not a good idea.
I just restored my good old Archer C7v2, updated with a recent release, and it works.
I'm really not sure about netgear reliability nowadays.

blkt wrote:

Yes I read that somewhere, good to recall it Wink

blkt wrote:

Serial may be a solution. I prepared long time ago (maybe 7 years) a cheap FT232RL chip just in case it goes wrong with dd-wrt. This is the first time I use it, so I'm not sure it works.
It's correctly recognized by Windows with official FTDI drivers.
Settings : 115200 bps / 8bits / Parity None / flow control None
But with Kitty or the old hyperterminal I have no output at all when connected to the router. Nothing, nothing. Sadly I can't spend days and days on it.

bushant wrote:

I read the bad block issue on the egc manual, that's why I tried the "dmesg | grep bad" command before updating to dd-wrt.
The only output was "[Warning] skb_warn_bad_offload!!!"

Next time I'll try to follow exactly the guide (however I doubt this is the cause) and update with the defined revision Wink
Keep in touch Wink

This is where your problem started, I believe it should have returned nothing, back to flashing curser!
