So last night I got this thing set up as a wireless bridge repeater. It connects to the wireless router in house via wifi (not ethernet), and rebroadcasts the signal in my garage.

Set it up last night, tested it and it was working great. Wifi was really spotty in the garage before and with this set up, was getting really good signal and speeds.

Came home from work today and its not working. Pages wouldn't load. Went in and looked at the settings and dnsmasq was enabled...

Part of the setup for the bridge was disabling dnsmasq, which I did when I set it up.

So I thought, "that's Strange, this router re-enabled it on its own" and I disabled, saved, then applied. Once router rebooted and reset, it was enabled again. It's like I cannot disable it now...

The build I had upgraded it to after initial flash is (49567).

Has anybody had this issue?

When setting it up I also had an issue when disabling the SPI firewall and keeping multicast filtering enabled... It would only let me do one or the other. If i disabled the firewall it would uncheck multicast.

Try resetting to defaults and then following these steps:
NOTE: You may have to check 'nvram show | grep block_multicast' to ensure the value is 1;
if it is 0, then 'nvram set block_multicast=1 && nvram commit && reboot'.
  1. Open the GUI address http://192.168.1.1 in your web browser
  2. Open the Setup -> Basic Setup tab
    1. WAN Connection Type: Disabled
    2. IP Address: 192.168.1.2 (if not in use and assuming Primary Router IP is 192.168.1.1)
    3. Mask: /24
    4. Gateway: 192.168.1.1 (or Primary Router IP if not 192.168.1.1)
    5. DHCP Server: Disable
    6. Uncheck Use DNSMasq for DNS, etc.
    7. Local DNS: 192.168.1.1 (or Primary Router IP if not 192.168.1.1)
    8. Change the Router Name (e.g. "DD-RB1") and set the Time Zone
    9. Save (not Apply)

  3. Open the Services -> Services tab: disable DNSMasq, then Save (not Apply)
  4. Open the Security -> Firewall tab
    1. Uncheck all boxes...except Filter Multicast (see why here)
    2. Disable SPI Firewall (workaround for issues)
    3. Save (not Apply)

  5. Open the Setup -> Advanced Routing tab: Change the Mode to Router, Save (not Apply)
  6. Open the Wireless -> Basic Settings tab
    1. Physical Interface Section (for multi-band routers, only use Repeater on one radio)
    2. Wireless Mode: Repeater Bridge
    3. Wireless Network Mode: Match Primary Router
Usually N*-Mixed (or G-Only for pre-N routers), as Mixed may not work)
    4. Wireless Network Name SSID: Must Match Primary Router EXACTLY including case
Note: some devices may not properly handle special characters, spaces, etc.
    5. Wireless Channel: Usually leave at Auto for DD-WRT to determine the channel
    6. Sensitivity Range (ACK Timing): 0 is recommended (this setting is not available for all routers)
    7. Save (not Apply)
    8. Virtual Interfaces Section: Click "Add"
    9. Wireless Network Name(SSID): Same as Primary SSID. If having problems, try a different one.
k2.4 (broadcom folder) builds may require using a different SSID from the Primary
    10. Save (not Apply)

  7. Open the Wireless -> Wireless Security tab
    1. Physical Interface section (WPA2-AES strongly advised)
Security Mode, WPA Algorithms & Shared Key: Must Match Primary Router
    2. Virtual Interfaces Section
Security Mode, WPA Algorithms & Shared Key: Must Match Physical Interface for k2.4
WPA2-AES should be able to use a different password on k2.6 and newer
WEP (with any password) or Open (disabled) should work on any kernel
    3. Save (not Apply)

  8. Open Services -> Services or Administration -> Management tab click "reboot" : allow router to reboot
  9. Log back into the router GUI at its new IP address: http://192.168.1.2 (or the chosen IP Address above)

Thanks, the terminal command will be helpful! I'm resetting it to factory defaults, and will set it up again and see how it goes.

I just realized this should not be in this forum, as this router uses an Atheros chip... not sure why I thought it was broadcom... Think I got it confused with my other router.

In that case, the wireless mode in step 6 will be Station Bridge or Client Bridge depending on which release you are on since Atheros uses that mode with a VAP to simulate a Repeater Bridge mode. Otherwise, the rest of the procedure should be similar in order.
