So, got new router (r7000) setting it up now. Trying to figure out if there are any downsides (quirks) with having both Explicit and Implicit beamforming on?

I understand the tech, but questions are more about pecularities with ddwrt. For example.

1) If both are on, will one overwrite the other? Or will explicit be used and implicit will be a fallback?

2) Does it do anything funky if you are moving around the with wifi device (for example walking around the house with the phone)

3) Any known issues with these? Or configurations in which its better to keep both off or one of them off?

I have a mix of 2.4 only devices (IoT bulbs/outlets) and 5ghz supporting devices (tablets/phones).

Thanks!

Moved this thread to the appropriate forum.

When in doubt post questions in the forum for your router.

Implicit and explicit beamforming have chipset specific quirks.

There is a sticky about wireless settings with recommended settings in this forum and there are also wikis about Wireless settings maybe those can shed some light and hopefully our resident wifi Guru's will chime in Smile

Based on this article, it appears both types can be used at the same time, since Netgear does this:

No issues whatsoever, just look at https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=327595 which would kind have answered your questions just by merely studying the advice there provided.

I use pretty much those settings (The r7000 is identical to my RT-AC68U hardware wise), performance is tip top depending on client, not all clients connected will get the best speeds, coverage ditto.

You have a decent piece of kit, owned by many on these boards and all the questions you may have are likely all answered, so dont hesitate to do some leg work.

The Implicit beamforming requires support from the client.
