https://wikidevi.wi-cat.ru/Netgear_R7500 you can compare the radios, that said I do not recommend v1.

Check retail box and model from bottom label of the router.

from https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices#Netgear

I don't think anyone wants a R7500v1 Sad
Most likely the R7500v2 will be labled as such on router case...
...I really dunno cause I never owed either

Model is listed in package contents on one side of the retail box and always see bottom label of the router.

The R7500v2 have one gigabit connection between switch and SOC. The combined throughput LAN and WAN is 1G.

The R7800 have two connections between switch and SOC and can handle 1G for each WAN and LAN.

This is true, but keep in mind with VPN we are nowhere near this bottleneck however CPU is fully loaded.

For full speed VPN, either place the clients directly on PC or use DD-WRT x86 with appropriate hardware.

The R7500v1 is tricky to support properly because of the Quantenna issue similar to the ASUS RT-AC87U; the upstream
in-kernel drivers do not support this hardware, and Quantenna was acquired by ON Semiconductor in 2019. I'm not aware
if anyone tried to do anything with madwifi or any other Open Source alternative to fixing this situation.
