I have flashed a Dlink DIR882 A1 w

05-26-2022-r48971 & 05-31-2022-r49028

and have noticed that even with the DLINK in a WAP only configuration hung off my main router Asus RT-86U running merlin firmware the Dlink gets 137Mbps/113Mbps on my Fiber 500/500. If I enable the wireless on the Asus I get 454/415. The reduced throughput on the Dlink is a hardware issue or firmware? I don't want to keep chasing the issue if this router is hardware restricted.

You are comparing the DIR-882 and the Asus RT-AC86U.

See this

https://wikidevi.wi-cat.ru/D-Link_DIR-882_rev_A1
https://wikidevi.wi-cat.ru/ASUS_RT-AC86U

Now go look at the specs of both machines, think about it for a second.

You are essentially comparing a Vespa to a Lamborghini and then expect the Vespa to be as fast or close to as fast as the Lambo is.

You could probably make the DIR-882 perform slightly better by using better wifi settings, so why dont you post your wifi settings page screenshots.

These are the only wireless settings that have been changed from the stock firmware

The 2.4Ghz can have better settings Like NG/mixed and the 5GHz if you have AC/N mixed use that.

When you did this test of yours which radio did you connect to?

5Ghz has more bandwidth with AC/N Mixed, the 2.4 will never be as fast as the 5ghz, you will never be able to get the same speeds as the Asus, just forget about it, maybe marginally better than your previous results using better settings, but it will never get that close.

Your Asus has a lot of beef under the shirt.

Since I was very close to the Dlink I connected to the 5Ghz one and used Speedtest app on iOS.

1) Do not use Auto wireless channel; pick a channel.
(You can use a wifi analyzer app on your phone to pick one if you are in a congested area)
2) You should be using 40MHZ channel width on 2.4
3) You should be using 80MHz channel width on 5GHz
4) Mixed or NG-Mixed on 2.4
5) We can't see your advanced wireless settings; but
6) Protection mode none or RTS/CTS
7) RTS threshold disable or 2346 (no lower than 1350 - 1760 IMHO).
8) Short Preamble enabled
9) Short GI enabled
10) Sensitivity range 1350

For the 5Ghz if I set 3) to use VHT80 then my iPhone refuses to authenticate. I get "Unable to join the network"

The reason is probably that the WLAN is configured incorrectly.

The regulatory domain should be configured correctly and there must also be a valid VHT80 channel configured that is supported by the end devices.

You can also misconfigure it with invalid 40 and 80 Mhz extension channels - this will even crash the radio firmware on some clients.

and VHT80 is fully backward compatible and consists of a 20 + 40 + 80Mhz channel

and the 20Mhz channel is the primary channel in the configuration.
even if a client does not support 40 or 80Mhz it can connect to 20Mhz without problems.

try 36+UU(+6) , this is actually supported by all devices.

Appreciate all the help but I am way over my head here. I am apparently putting lipstick on this pig of a router. It is still a pig. I can not get the throughput higher than 120Mbps or so. It is best for me to simply reset it to factory settings and toss it in my box of older routers to gather dust.

Will just keep using my Asus router. I just thought that this Dlink could remedy speed issues I have had at times in some rooms especially with the Assus having to be in a closet due to wiring layout.

You could also use it as a wireless extender, if the asus doesnt handle all areas.

In a pinch any wireless coverage is better than none.

Im not a fan of rmerlin anyway, because its given into Asus bullshit and is now semi neutered because Asus made it near impossible to improve the stock firmware
rmerlin still doesn't do anything better kernel version, libraries version and so on, which tbh is a security issue waiting to happen and still only relies on stock for exploit patches, so lose lose situation.

But you dont have DD-WRT for that Asus either so rmerlin's additions may be slightly better over stock.
