Thanks for the confirmation, I kind of figured that was what the result would be.

Router Model: tp-link Archer C7 v5
Upgraded From: r48810
Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r48971 std (05/26/22)
Kernel: Linux 3.18.140-d6 #143568 Thu May 26 08:06:28 +07 2022 mips
Reset: Reset to defaults with reset button

Noticed in dmesg output that some firmware failed to load.
See attachment for dmesg output.

After resetting router to defaults and then filling in fields for my isp / wan lan etc... I disabled both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radios. Connected to modem and local wired lan then booted. Wired clients had snappy connections to the www as well as quick logins to forums & email.
Next I enabled 2.4 GHz with default settings and (WPA2 Personal with SHA256 + AES) security. Wireless connections to www, forum logins were all quick with no delays.

I then enabled 5 Ghz with default settings and same security.
Initial www browsing was quick but anything requiring login protocol would stall. I've since disabled 5G and am using the 2.4 GHz without problem.

5 GHz on my Broadcom router is working fine with default wifi settings.

Use only WPA2 personal with CCMP-128 AES.
Do not use SHA256

The "Basic Wireless Settings" wiki does not cover WPA2 with SHA256. Why is not desirable to use? But this isn't the source of my issue described above or it would show up on the other machine.

var/log/messages attached for noted session described above.
I noticed in the log that ath9k is the operating device. The failed firmware install was for ath10k in the dmesg output.

many of the "firmware load messages" are simply irrelevant debug information

see >

https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=1245038&highlight=firmware+api#1245038

And using "WPA2 Personal with SHA256" is not recommended.
Why not? Because it causes problems on various clients.

and you should configure your WLAN correctly and e.g. not use an auto channel Smile

I did the first go round. I'm sticking with factory till we figure out what is going on with the 5 GHz.

I need more than passing statements regarding SHA256. A link to some cogent reference or discussion would be helpful.

What is the -Z option to syslogd. I did not find any reference in Busybox.

In the 5G wireless settings only I noticed there was the option to choose dd-wrt firmware or vanilla firmware with dd-wrt being the current selection. I switched this to vanilla and applied settings after saving. This solved my laggy / stalled connection issues in 5G. It has been running for only 15 minutes but the difference was immediately apparent.
Current 5G settings:
Mixed, WHT40, auto 165 + 169 (5825 MHz HT40) and defaults for all other settings.
After this has been running for a few hours with no issues I'll go back and tweak the channel, ack and beacon settings.

Look at the stickies in this forum about best wireless settings and firmware type.

I thought I missed something, but nope, I had read through those stickies. It is quite alot of information to work through and determine what is relevant to your situation. Vanilla to me in the kernel world means generic and not tailored to the body of software that it is installed alongside. Switching to vanilla was out of desperation since the other tweaks recommended weren't resolving the issue.

I'm across the house now with a client connection quality of only 52% but the lag is gone and things are snappy.

this is probably because many stickies are not maintained.
The screenshots from the "QCA BEST WIFI SETTINGS" are 2 years old and some settings are missing.
Like for example the firmware type ...

But you can also google the settings or search the forums or read the release threads - many experienced users use and recommend the vanilla firmware.
