If that fails get a serial output of the affected machine. Report back after the fact.

putty will only return a few lines during boot then goes garbled and then no data at all (mostly no data at all). TX and RX are connected properly and I applied the fix in the sticky but no useable output from putty. Even tried 48897 factory to DDWRT twice (hoping for a brick) and "nvram erase && reboot" in between but she just updates, reboots and still no Wireless tab.

AFAIK it's nvram erase not the other way around.

you are already using an unsupported build,

Also, we dont know if this device was actually fully working to begin with WIFI wise, the only way to know for sure is grabbing a serial output.

Now you can chose to ignore what advice is provided, but note, if so, personally I will also choose to spend my valuable time helping others or doing patches for dd-wrt.

Let me try and clear up a few things..... I am using r48897 and have been since you advised it. I am not using older build and only tried a few to see if the wireless tab was there (it was not). I am not using "erase nvram" since you pointed that out and I`m using the correct command now (nvram erase && reboot). I just didn`t know. I tried to get putty output when you 1st advised it. I applied all the fixes and still have garbled output. I don`t know how to fix that. Maybe I can enable logs and provide some data that way. I read everything 1st and try myself before I ask questions as its not my intent to waste any ones time. If I don`t know, I just don`t know and thats why I`m asking. Yes, Trying a factory to DDWRT was an act of desperation but at midnight I didn`t really care if I bricked it or not. I would like some details on how to proceed from here.

Garbled output putty fix already advised on the post just above your last one https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=323931

Thanks for clearing those details up, I was going from what you had typed and not knowing it it was a typo or something else, I thought it would be good to point it out. Now that that part is clear.

Let us know how that went.

Depending on the chip in use, the USB TTL serial connection might need to connect ground pin after power on.

Well seems the drivers fail to load or not even there?

reading https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Linksys_EA8500 and the serial output these is something completely different happening there.
Ill ping BS just to double check the drivers are present and there is no issue there.

curiosity of curiosities, since both routers are I guess identical I wonder what the other ones difference is, or maybe they arent exactly identical. Dont know.

Came from different sources so I doubt they are identical. I have it open and can provide info from the board.

Would be helpful I hope to get both routers hw details, meanwhile I have ponged BS to have a look in this thread.

Im curious what the working one says serial output wise just for curiosity sake. lets hope BS turns up.

OK, I can take microscope pics of all the info written on the boards and putty feeds from both. I will put them in separate zip files. Do you need closeups of any particular components ?

I think just the silkscreened portions where the hw versions are identifying the boards, just for curiosity sake, to see if the cfes could be interchangeable for instance or the rest of the flash partitions, in case something is damaged on the problematic router and one could use the other as a flash donor, for instance.

So they need to be pretty much similar HW wise. If when you are looking at the boards if there are obvious differences aside from silkscreened portions documenting them could also then be helpful to determine is flash donation is an option. Even where radios are concerned.

If there are obvious differences then that part is likely not an option. Not for the faint hearted, dumping chip flashes or partitions contents is the easy part so to speak, reprogramming any faulty portions is another mission especially if they require specialist HW programmers and if needed removing any chips for reprogramming. If it is at all an option, but Im getting ahead of myself.

In the case of the failing router, until BS replies and weighs in, I think we can so far determine that there are issues with missing drivers at least and perhaps failing radios, if this is recoverable or not its anyone's guess, could be if its hardware issue, no amount of re-flashing will fix it.

Could be easier and faster to just to return the faulty router, time wise that is. Or grabbing some faulty router for parts, depends on where you want to go with this depending on what is wrong.

Exactly what I was thinking too. Can you return this unit?

Have you tried flashing back to stock FW then checking the radios? Might be a good test and if dead on stock FW, you will know it's most likely bad radio chips.

Atheros SoCs do not use CFE (that's generally Broadcom); u-boot or redboot is what is used on non-Broadcom devices in DD-WRT. There's probably other lines of interest in the log, but @mrjcd likely hit the nail on the head (hardware failure):
