Hello!

My current config:
Router r7800
Firmware DD-WRT v3.0-r48741 std (04/26/22)

I attempted to run Proton VPN on my router, and it gave me severe lagg/slow speeds than with just using the desktop version. I had made a post previously trying to trouble shoot that, and made the decision to just use the software.

However, I am now faced with a new scenario. My parents wanted me to setup their home network. I ordered a R6700 for them and planning to load dd-wrt, but have yet to open the box. I told them I would setup VPN on their router so all of their network would be covered (they recently got attacked).

Was the slowness/lagg only due to proton vpn's configuration (they dont really support open-dns) or will all open-dns based VPN's suffer from the same?

I am wondering, what VPN provider have each of you used and received good results from? I am open to paid VPN plans, if that will ensure their speeds are not negatively affected.

yep R7800 (XR500) is good and powerful router, but VPN need lots of CPU power...indeed...even for its bigger brother R9000 (XR700) VPN is like 150Mbit ish...
So, if you need top VPN performance than DDWRT x86 or x64 on a PC is your friend or a something like this https://eu.protectli.com/vault-6-port/

About VPN, you have a better choice to use Wireguard instead of OpenVPN and its less CPU intensive, but you have to find VPN provider that supports it on a router level...

As far as lag its concern, it depends on many things...servers, encryption, specs, traffic...and if using DDWRT make sure you use the last build https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2022/ as it has all the security patches and VPN updates...
