Hey guys, i want to update a stock r7800 to DDWRT over wifi. Would it be safe to upgrade thru the gui via wifi ? I know the risk of a wifi drop, but the router is downstairs. Cant use CLI, as stock fw wont telent or ssh.

Although its not the best thing to do it, ive done many updates via wifi...if something goes wrong you have tftp on R7800 so it could be unbricked easily...but more likely to find out if your R7800 will handle the update, as many R7800 (XR500) could have a bad sectors in their flash ram and then it could not be DDWRT flashable...at all...

carefully read this one

You should be fine. I recommend that you close you browser completely once the Wifi drops and wait a two minutes for the router to recycle. You want your browser to relaunch with either no connection or a fresh connection.

That being said, avoid WiFi connections if you can when doing an update for the reason you mentioned. My preference is CLI so the router handles the download itself. One less device in the process.

FYI you can telnet in r7800 stock, never used it for flashing FW mind you but to turn it on:

Code:
http://192.168.1.1/debug.htm

then enable by toggling telnet button, i've only used it in past to: mtd erase netgear to bring radios back if coming from different firmware's.

Yeah, using Voxel firmware the option to telnet is there. But ive installed stock on it and there is no option to telnet when in debug mode. Actually sitting here thinking of just putting DDWRT back in. The only reason i went back to stock was because my wifi smart bulbs seem to play up with nightly builds. I really do miss DDWRT though, so it looks like im going to flash back.

OK, i just did a DDWRT instal from stock and now i cant get access to the router. DDWRT is installed but i entered the wrong password 3 times. I was trying to get into to clear/factory defaults. Any ideas what the password might be if coming from stock ?

The sticker on the back of the r7800 or 'admin'.

A brief search reveals 1.0.2.74 or 1.0.2.76 removed telnet access from stock firmware. 1.0.2.68 still has telnet.

First world problems avoiding Ethernet for GUI or TFTP factory to ddwrt install. Yes, see factory label on bottom.

Assume this must be down to Netgear removing it in your version of FW, i have defiantly used on stock R7800 in past to get Radios back showing, but last time i used was a while back, but glad your sorted
