Hi

What is the best way to upgrade my router to never version ( I already have latest version installed but want to know for the future ) ?
I have seen different guidance which is a bit confusing.

Can I do:
1) restart router
2) backup settings ( just in case)
3) upgrade to latest DD-WRT version ( without resetting to difficult settings )?
4) restart router - just in case

or I always need / have to reset router to default settings, upgrade ,then configure all WiFi, other setting, etc. from beginning ?

Thanks.

Please list router model / revision or version, build number installed not latest, and new build in question.

Generally, do not reset. Run into problems? Reboot. Cold boot. Troubleshoot, update, fix a config? Maybe.
Depends how old previous build(s) were and resulting config generated. Do not restore old build backups.

Build was over a year old? Yeah, recommend starting over. Which reset method depends hardware model.
Common reset methods: GUI factory defaults, hardware reset (model specific) or nvram erase && reboot.

The rest is up to you. Router has a very long uptime? Wouldn't hurt to reboot then allow 20 minutes or so.
Have an advanced configuration with USB connected device? Maybe unmount, or disable USB temporarily.

Router details:
Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r48646
Model: ASUS RT-AC87U

What I am wondering is, currently I have the newest version installed. However, when new version will be released let's say: r48647.
What is the recommended procedure to upgrade to "the latest and greatest" from previous one?

Thanks.

You're not keeping up, r48741 is the current release.

Original device support thread.

You shouldn't need to reset unless you run into issues that cannot be fixed by configuration changes.

Over time I’ve found that the safest way to upgrade is through a telnet session not using GUI. After connecting to the router:
- “cd /tmp”
- run “curl -O path to desired image incl file name ”
- run “write name of desired image linux”
- reboot

If upgrading from a reasonable recent build, no need to reset settings

for the write command I add the & symbol at the end; example...

- run without quotes “write name-of-desired-image linux &”

This way the write command will run in the background even if your telnet or ssh session disconnects which may happen on remote sites.
