I Would like to utilize my newly flashed Asus router to block adds ( comercials ).
What is the best way to do it, based on internet search:
- use router settings ?
- use RaspberryPi as local DNS?
If best way is to do it on DD WRT router, then please provide steps - I have seen different articles & FAQ's at the end I got confused which one to follow.

My router details:
Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r44715 std (11/03/20)
ASUS RT-AC87U

First of all you are running an old and outdated build.
I would recommend to upgrade to a recent build (current build is 48646) and after upgrade reset to defaults and put settings in manually (never restore from a backup to a different build)
See the forum guidelines with helpful pointers about how to research your router, where and what firmware to download, where and how to post and many other helpful tips:

Ad blocking is mostly done with DNS either by using a DNS provider which does the work for you (AdGuard, NextDNS) or downloading large (host) lists which will block domains.
This is done with scripts which download the block list and will setup DNSMasq for you.
