Hi,

I need your help please because I'm not good with networking.
I have dd-wrt router with a public IP and I need to create a VPN with a friend that have the same my internet provider. I configured the VPN and opened the ports needed for it but I cannot ping his router and he cannot ping my router.

My public IP is released by DHCP:
IP: 109.xxx.xxx.108
Subnet: 255.255.255.128

my friend's IP:
IP: 109.xxx.xxx.60
Subnet: 255.255.255.128

How to configure the routers to route the requests? Or may be I can change the subnet masks to reach the hosts?

Thank you for reply

My router is Linksys WRT54G/GL/GS Firmware
DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/10/09) vpn - build 13064

my friend hasn't dd-wrt but a basic tp-link WR543G v2, but he can buy a new router if this helps

I was thinking about recommending WireGuard, but that is not available for your router let alone for your friends.

OpenVPN might work on those old builds but to make matters worse I do not think it is even available or working on newer builds.
Besides performance wise you will not get more than 2-3 Mb/s if you get it running at all.

What I do know is that those old builds have safety issues so it is not recommended to use those old routers/builds when the router is directly connected to the internet.

About OpenVPN the link to instructions to setup OpenVPN and also for a site-to-site setup (for bidirectional traffic) can be found in my signature at the bottom of this post but that is for modern routers running a recent build so might not apply to your routers.

There is NO WAY to make serious progress w/ this problem given current conditions. The OP and friend are using seriously outdated hardware and firmware.

It's probably time for both of you to upgrade your routers to at least wireless AC (i.e., wifi5) with decent VPN performance. I use the ASUS RT-AC68U, and while it has less than stellar performance w/ OpenVPN (~30Mbps), I've seen as much as 111Mbps w/ WG (Wireguard).

But as it stands, this project is dead in the water until both the OP and friend modernize their respective networks.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the vpn run without problems from another location.

Router A did not see router B.

I go to place A and I ping to public ip router place B and it doesn't reply.
I go to place B and I ping to public ip router place A and it doesn't reply.
I go to place Y and then both routers reply to the ping.
