I have read many guides here and on the wiki on setting up wireless settings for DD-WRT in general, and lots of forum posts about this router (WRT3200acm) specifically.

The issues I am having are with my wifi (of course).

I am primarily concerned with the performance of wlan0 5ghz.

Info about my setup:

I am currently running firmware v3.0-r47911 which seems to be working fine as far as the web interface is concerned.

I have a 1 gig fiber connection and am able to get 920~mbps on lan (up and down), however on 5ghz I am getting 400mbps~ up / 480mbps down (from my bedroom which is about 30 feet away from the router that is in the living room on the same floor. I get around 520mbps up / down standing right next to the router).

I have used a wifi scanner to see which channel is best for my location as I am surrounded by neighbors with wifi connections. My current configuration is:

wlan0
wireless mode: AP
Wireless network mode: AC-Only
Channel Width: VHT80
Wireless Channel: 124-5620 MHz
Extension Channel: LU (-2)
Allow channel overlapping: disable
Wireless SSID broadcast: enable
TX power: 30
antenna gain: 0dbi
u-apsd: disable
disassoc low ack: disable:
protection mode: none
rts threshold: disable
short preamble: disable
short gi: enable
single user beamforming: disable
multi user beamforming: disable
ap isolation: disable
beacon interval: 112
dtim interval: 2
vmm support: enable
radar detection: disable
scanlist: default

I'm testing the speed with the speedtest.net app on my Samsung Tab S7 which is capable of 5ghz.

Am I wasting my time with this device or is there some magic configuration that I can find to allow me to run at close to the same speeds that I'm getting over lan?

I paid $240 about a week ago and can return it and get a different one -- should I do this?

It is very important to me that I achieve as close to 1ghz wireless throughout my apartment as possible. I work from home and the rest of my family is here 24 / 7 doing things over wifi -- should I ditch this router and move to some sort of mesh network?

Correction: I want to achieve as close to 940mbps as possible (not 1ghz Razz )

Also, I forgot to mention that I am using wlan1 2.4ghz and have disabled wlan2

You must take into account the capabilities of your wireless client, certainly few are 4x4 and 160 MHz capable.

SmallNetBuilder reviews: WRT3200ACM, R7800, R9000, R7500v2, EA8500 Part 1 & Part 2 answer is yes & no.

That said recommend: R7800 (XR450/XR500), R9000 (R8900/XR700), R7500v2, EA8500 (serial flash) or x86.

Perhaps try Channel Width: VHT160 on 5GHz wlan and report back. Your configuration is VHT80!

Focus on basics, then moving to other settings from defaults test each one at a time for performance, stability.
Regulatory domain, channel width, extension, channel aside maybe try single/multi beamforming, beacon 100.

Duckduckgo tab s7 iperf --> Tab S7 Plus Review, Tab S7 FE 5G Review, Tab S7 Tablet Review, find networking.

Maybe a TX power increase is not needed, not sure how big your place is, so 20 to 24 range more reasonable.
Keep in mind TX value is only one directon host to client. Valid VHT160 36+UUU, 64+LLL, 100+UUU, 128+LLL

Focus on Basic says do VHT80. All I know it has lower freq, which means it travel further?

Remember that more bandwidth also means the signal is competing with more noise in the receiver. You'll need a really strong signal - you'll have a really short useful range - to operate successfully at 160 MHz bandwidth. At realistic ranges, you can often get a higher data rate with a somewhat smaller bandwidth. You'll have to experiment, but in my house a 40 MHz bandwidth is working better now than the 80 MHz I used originally.

Yes, most important to me is range and less chance of interference so using 20 MHz sacrificing high speeds.

Otherwise would need access points everywhere, so at that juncture would rather just use Ethernet instead.
