Hello everyone.
My router is WRT1900ACSV2, and a friend of mine's router is WRT1900ACSV1. Their CPU and memory configurations are exactly the same.

But I found that these two routers cannot flash the other's firmware, indicating that their hardware is different.

I checked the Internet, some people vaguely said that the two wireless chips are different, but they didn't specify it.
Does anyone know the details?

Ps:As the content discussed in this post has changed at a later stage,The topic of discussion changed from the difference of router models to how to successfully connect to foreign VPN servers in China。So I modified the title for easy retrieval

The only differences I know of are for the WRT1900AC, not the WRT1900ACS.

https://wikidevi.wi-cat.ru/Linksys_WRT1900ACS
https://openwrt.org/toh/linksys/wrt1900acs

But there are probably other reasons why you can't flash one with the other that are not hardware related, whatsoever.... Wink

I went to see the opewrt firmware download webpage, there is no distinction between wrt1900acsv1 and wrt1900acsv2, what you said seems reasonable. But back to the dd-wrt firmware download webpage and distinguished the two routers, they have different firmware downloads.

My question is, if my wrt1900acsv2 router refreshes the dd-wrt firmware used for wrt1900acsv1, what will happen: it will not start? Can't load the WIFI module? Or what else?

You made a statement; now you ask a question about the very statement you made. I could probably download the stock and DD-WRT and OpenWRT firmware images and do an analysis or a web search or email the pertinent authorities, but it just seems like this is a desire to question things unnecessarily. Keep.It.Simple.S*****. Sorry, not trying to be rude, but you're trying to find out the material that a shear pin is made out of in an engine that just plain runs.

Previous forum discussion of this ended with the conclusion that the only difference is the location in memory of a table of transmit power limits in different regulatory environments. If this is correct, the routers are functionally equal but still require distinct firmware.

I have also seen a notion floated that the WRT1900ACv2 and the WRT1900ACS (v1) are the same router. On this point I am less certain, but I believe the answer is pretty firmly known by others in these parts.

It’s because I didn’t express it clearly. Let me put it another way. It’s like this:

In the first paragraph of my text, I said: The two routers cannot flash each other's firmware. It is because I saw other people's sharing and expressions on the Internet, not the results of my own experiments.

Then, in the second paragraph of the text, I asked a question. I wanted to know if there are any bad consequences if flashing another model of firmware in the DD-WRT firmware. If not, my V2 machine is going to flash the firmware of V1, because V1 has a very old firmware version that has what I need, but V2 does not have this old version of firmware to download.

Is this a stock firmware question or a DD-WRT question? Please read @SurprisedItWorks' comment above. What would be helpful is linked information already read about this subject.... #discussionetiquette

Thank you for your answer. My machine is wrt1900acsV2. If I am sure that I can flash the DD-WRT firmware of V1, I am going to do so, so I first ask if there are any bad results.

The reason I did this is that there is a historical version of DD-WRT firmware that has what I need. But this version only provides V1 download, no V2 download, so I can only try to use V1 firmware。

Some details would help here; what exactly is it that you absolutely need from this historical version of the firmware? You are going to risk bricking your router over something trivial that likely has a solution that doesn't require this risk.

Don't.

KP re discussion etiquette. Certainly agree when the commenter knows where to find a reference, and I don't. And the OPer can search as well as I, probably better. Also re etiquette: you don't assign volunteer helpers homework.

Looking at the link you provided, I found that the DD-WRT firmware of ACSV1 can be refreshed to the ACV2 router. Some people pointed out that some version numbers have problems, while others are completely normal.

I'm going to try out the available version number when I get home from work and then downgrade to the old version number I need.

If you have ACSV2, especially a recent production unit, do not flash firmware for other hardware revisions.

I don't refresh old versions of factory firmware.
I just want to refresh the old version of DD-WRT firmware.

The reason is that my VPN provider gave me a VPN plug-in that only ran on an older version of DD-WRT.

A misunderstanding, there are zero reasons to flash any firmwares designed for different hardware revisions.

You really should consider another VPN provider if StrongVPN cannot help you with a recent DD-WRT release.
