Hello,

Just upgraded my firmware to the new version r47720. I try to setup my VPN from IPVanish but when it comes to a reboot all settings of the VPM dissapear and are not saved.

Are there know issues with this new version and VPN (IPVanish in this case)

I followed these intructions

https://support.ipvanish.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002080733-DD-WRT-v3-Router-Setup

Maybe they are not correct anymore with the new version?

Welcome to the forum

Unfortunately you were posting in the wrong forum.

See the forum guidelines with helpful pointers about how to research your router, where and what firmware to download, where and how to post and many other helpful tips:
https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=324087

But no worries I will transfer this thread (and edit the heading) to the appropriate forum Smile

OpenVPN guides are a sticky in the Advanced Networking forum:
https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=327398

Of interest to you is the Client Setup guide.

Their instructions look quite decent.
The Client setup guide has some improvements but even without those it is supposed to work.

To troubleshoot add:
verb 5
In the Additional Config, Reboot the router

Show screenshots of the Settings page and the Status page so that we can have a look.

This is from the OpenVPN client setup guide see if that helps:

https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/download.php?id=48550

Quote:
IPVanish
https://support.ipvanish.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002080733-DD-WRT-v3-Router-Setup
But change the following:
Basic Setup page:
Use for Static DNS 1 and 2 your normal trusted DNS servers e.g. 9.9.9.9, 1.1.1.1 and not the one advised by IPVanish

OpenVPN setup page:
Tunnel Protocol: UDP4
Compression: No
Tunnel MTU setting: 1400
Verify Server Cert. :Enabled/ticked

Do not put anything in the Additional Config but: verb 5

You are making a connection so could be a compression problem as NAT is enabled and although MTU is on the high side it should work at least partially with MTU 1500

Hello,

With those last suggestions VPN worked for me and a connection with internet is possible. It even is a bit quicker then usual. Very Happy

Are there more settings / suggestions to make the connection as quick as possible even with a VPN connection. That is the only negative of having a VPN Connection.

Thanks!

Great to hear you solved it Smile

The used encryption cipher is outdated the new GCM ciphers are a tad quicker (CHACHAPOLY even quicker) but the increase is small.

Not sure if they support it but you can try the following, but chances are it is not working:
Encryption Cipher: Not set
First Data Cipher: AES-128-GCM
Second Data Cipher: AES-256-GCM

Much quicker is WireGuard (about 3 times faster) also a VPN connection but not sure if that is supported by IPVanish, most providers do support it though.
By supported I mean supported on the router, often they do support it but only with an app and not on the router.

It is fully supported by DDWRT (docs are also a sticky in the Advanced Networking forum)

Hi. I didn't want to clutter things up, but I need to post something to be able to download a openvpn doc.
Hope you don't mind
