@BrainSlayer
I have reupdated the firmware to version 11-18-2021-r47656 as it would make sense to apply any fixes to the recent firmware versions.

I have then enabled SSH, SYSLOGD (TELNET was already enabled), logged in using SSH and run the command "cat /var/log/messages".

I have attached a TXT file with the output.

Let me know if you need any further information.

@kernel-panic69

I prefer to wait if it is going to help the community. I am not in a hurry to resolve the problem as this is not one of my production routers so anything that anyone needs, just ask and I will endeavor to help. As I am not a Linux expert I may need some guidance but can also Google anything I am not sure of (like I just did with SSH).

It doesn't look like you enabled klogd. There should be a whole lot more output than that on boot-up. Thanks for your efforts!

Greets kernel-panic69 & BrainSlayer,

Sorry, my mistake, I thought I had to select either syslogd or klogd Rolling Eyes.

I've now enabled klogd and attached the "cat /var/log/messages" output.

Still doesn't look like a full log. Both syslogd and klogd enabled and reboot router. Or maybe try dmesg, if you can capture full output.

I think the rest is not happening because the WAN is not coming up.

Probably because the hardware is not being detected due to lack of driver loading properly. Still have not received a response from BrainSlayer regarding the aforementioned commit. He only fixed the 3.10 kernel tree, though; not the 3.18 or any others.

Hello kernel-panic69 & Per Yngve Berg,

Both syslogd and klogd are definitely enabled (just checked again) so the last attachment of the "cat /var/log/messages" output was definitely all there was.

I have now run "dmesg" and attached the output.

That has the information I was expecting from the other logs. I've forwarded an update to BrainSlayer.

from the log the kernel log shows that your switch is not responsive. i have already devices with broken switches and all of them where the same realtek switch which gets very hot in operation. it really looks like your device is broken

Hello BrainSlayer,

Thanks for an answer to the mystery.

I thought since it was faulty to try and install the Openwrt firmware on it and I think I have totally bricked the device.

Strangely I followed the instructions from a post that was (adapted to my environment) as follows:

> scp openwrt-19.07.8-ar71xx-generic-wndr3700-squashfs-factory.img root@192.168.1.1:/tmp
> ssh root@192.168.1.1
# cd /tmp
# mtd -f write openwrt-19.07.8-ar71xx-generic-wndr3700-squashfs-factory.img linux

Output was.....

Unlocking linux ...
[flash] : Could not unlock MTD device: linux
linux: Not supported
Writing from openwrt-19.07.8-ar71xx-generic-wndr3700-squashfs-factory.img to linux ... [w]
Warning unaligned data, we use manual padding to avoid errors. size was 133!!!

# reboot

Now the router has a flashing power light and that's it. Looks screwed.

It doesn't matter if the router was faulty but curious as to what I did wrong.

Bump!

Re my previous post I still would like to know what I did wrong when I tried to crossflash the router from dd-wrt to openwrt using the commands I found in another forum.

I would like to know as I have many more routers to prepare and I may encounter the situation where I need to crossflash a dd-wrt to an openwrt firmware and going directly from dd-wrt to openwrt is a lot quicker than reverting a dd-wrt to original firmware then updating to openwrt.

I also would like to know if in my situation with no LAN ports available whether I would be able to unbrick this router.

You didn't flash it from the webUI or from TFTP.

Hello kernel-panic69,

So I shouldn't have used the following commands in a shell?:
> scp openwrt-19.07.8-ar71xx-generic-wndr3700-squashfs-factory.img root@192.168.1.1:/tmp
> ssh root@192.168.1.1
# cd /tmp
# mtd -f write openwrt-19.07.8-ar71xx-generic-wndr3700-squashfs-factory.img linux

I got those commands from a another website that the user used to crossflash a dd-wrt firmware to a openwrt firmware.

They said they would regularly swap between dd-wrt and openwrt and provided the commands for going between both directions.

I thought it would be safer using commands instead of the GUI.

I am not worried about this router as BrainSlayer said the LAN ports are gone so this router would be binned so I thought I would learn something by doing the crossflash but as I said in my previous post I have many routers that I am going to work on so I would like to know what I am doing.

Thanks for answering me. I do appreciate it.

Regards,

fbagnato
