Ok, let me repeat: You do NOT connect the red wire. That information does not apply, whatsoever. You don't use that wire, whatsoever. All you need is GND, TX, and RX.

I noticed something---see attached picts...You will notice that a pict that I extracted from this forum shows the "lands" and their designations as to what they do/go to (tx, rx, gnd, etc)...You will notice that om the printed circuit board pict, it says 3.3V and in the description of the cable I have saying 5volts....Now what?

*ahem*

DO NOT CONNECT THE RED WIRED. AGAIN, ONLY CONNECT

TX TO RX

RX TO TX

GND TO GND.

Otherwise, you might cook your router if you connect that 5v wire.

Agreed...I was not planning to...

Gonna tackle this in the morning after church services...Have installed Putty in XP laptop...Have to look for configuration on line as to setting up the program and "field" entries.

OK-

Started "setup" a few min ago following these directions as follows:

PuTTY (All), HyperTerminal (WinXP and older), minicom (Linux), picocom (Linux), terminalbpp (Win)

Terminal settings:
Baud: 115200
Data bits: 8
Stop Bits: 1
Parity: none
Flow control: None

HyperTerminal in Windows XP: Start Button->All Programs->Accessories->Communication->HyperTerminal.
To save the configuration, click File-->Save As, and select a save location

Putty: check the Device Manager (Win) or `dmesg` output (Linux) for the COM port name.

Select Serial under Connection, use the port used for serial.

(e.g. COM3 in Windows)[/color]
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Ok, have gone into (winxp) device manager and Ports (COM and LPT) and lists only Printer Port (LPT1) and NO SERIAL CONNECTION LISTED.

This is as far as I can go which Putty requires.

Did you plug the USB adapter into the laptop/PC so that it sees the new device...

Do you have any devices in device manager that obviously don't have a driver installed...

.... you may have to install the proper driver for it first *before* plugging it in.

Which operating system are you trying this in? both or which one?

IMHO might be easier in windows xp.

What does this even mean?
Did you install the drivers for XP?
We cannot see what is on the other side of the screen...

What does this even mean?
**It means that there is "some sort of an issue" with what is highlighted.

Did you install the drivers for XP?
**No, I did not notice any directive to install drivers - I did see a link though but, no directive.

We cannot see what is on the other side of the screen...
**That goes both ways...lol

we cannot see what is on YOUR screen. We do not know what you are doing right not exactly.

are you making attempts at trying to solve this?

**I would not be here wasting time if I wasn't...It seems this is fighting me every step of the way....They should have made the usb port in the rear to be "first boot" and have a downloadable stock software on the manufacturers website.

I saw a link on a very recent post about drivers for xp BUT, was never advised to download and install them....Might as well now, since I can't proceed any farther being told by Putty to connect to a port that is not listed.

Yep, completely glazed over this, obviously. I wasn't aware that I had to word it as if I had to tell you the obvious deduction of reasoning here.
