Router ModelAsus RT-AC68U
Firmware VersionDD-WRT v3.0-r44715 std (11/03/20)

A basic thing for any os is that you are able to install packages, not? Why is this not working out-of-the-box.

I already did not want to install new firware just because of getting into this kind of problems.

root@router1:/jffs/tmp/ipkg# ipkg update
mkdir: can't create directory '//usr/local/lib/': Read-only file system

44715 is not a recommended/optimal build, it is old and obsolete.
Latest build as of today is 47608

See the forum guidelines with helpful pointers about how to research your router, where and what to download, where to post and many other helpful hints:
https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=324087

To install packages you have to install Entware first.
DDWRT is intended also to use on low flash routers so not everything is compiled in all builds.

First you have to make writable storage e.g. connect an USB stick or enable JFFS2 etc. then install Entware and then you can install tcpdump and other packages.
See: https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Installing_Entware

(I use a developers version for my Broadcom Northstar (e.g. your AC68U) and have tcpdump compiled in Smile )

Thanks for the tip on this entware. But I do not see anything in the manuals about a quick and easy mount -o bind using the jffs. No need for formatting external devices.

Maybe nice to add to the manual?

i believe your AC68U must have tcpdump by default...
however as egc suggested... new build, than install entware "For dual-core routers" (use opt), than 'opkg install tcpdump' ...
i do have tcpdump on my routers either by default or installed via entware(opt)
on all of them tcpdump is working as it should...

my tcpdump via entware...
root@3TPLINK-WR1043NDv2:~# tcpdump --version
tcpdump version 4.9.3
libpcap version 1.10.1 (with TPACKET_V3)

From the depths of DD-WRT vestigial archives:

https://bit.ly/3pKlX81

The included ipkg binary relies on jffs, and it links to old, outdated OpenWRT package archives, if I am not mistaken. It is also something related to the Firmware Mod Kit as well, if memory serves. I don't even think it is useful to attempt using OpenWRT *.ipk files with this utility anymore, either.

I have the same router, but only on the latest DD-WRT v3.0-r47822 std (12/08/21) build.

tcpdump version 4.99.1 with libcap 1.10.1 is preinstalled and running just fine. (latest versions)

So me thinks PICNIC. Why would anyone want some external solution when the internal is already optimal IDK.

Take care now, Cool

I confirm this from Admin->Command Prompt from my Asus RT-N18U:
Code:
which tcpdump

/usr/sbin/tcpdump

tcpdump --version

tcpdump version 1.10.1
libpcap version unknown
libpcap version unknown... um... Smile

I have Entware installed to /opt:
Code:
/opt/bin/opkg list | grep tcpdump

tcpdump - 4.9.3-3 - Network monitoring and data acquisition tool

Could DD-WRT update its built-in TCPdump? I cannot answer that question. Smile

Some time ago tcpdump was removed from almost all routers (it is a config option: CONFIG_TCPDUMP=y)

After some begging from me and others it was reinstated for some, among other the R7800 and it still is there:
Code:
root@R7800-2:~# tcpdump --version
tcpdump version 1.10.1
libpcap version unknown

But not on my EA8500 also running 47822.

Maybe it was not removed on some routers or reinstated?

The .config files are not publicly available as far as I know (well they are but these do not seem the ones which are used for compiling)

It is known, libcap version is 1.10.1 and mistakenly reported as the tcpdump version. tcpdump version is 4.99.1 if you check the source code svn I linked in my original reply.

also is higher than the entware version, 4.9.3 is older than 4.99.1 since the later is the very very latest. https://www.tcpdump.org/

So dd-wrt is using the very very latest stable release, nothing todo here.

There is "libpcap" immediately following "tcpdump-configure" in "tcpdump.mk; it was added to "consider dependencies" @ 12619. It doesn't seem that the tcpdump compile process considers the $(VERSION) information as best as I can tell. Perhaps the implementation of making the dependency of libpcap not using "make depend" or not making it first is part of the problem? There's probably a way to fix this that isn't jumping right out at me at the moment.

https://svn.dd-wrt.com/browser/src/router/libcap/libpcap/Makefile
https://svn.dd-wrt.com/browser/src/router/rules/tcpdump.mk

If you read the particulars from the horse's mouth, libpcap is a dependency that should be installed first:

https://www.tcpdump.org/

I'm just not sure the way it's handled in DD-WRT is correct, is all.

Alpha software is unstable, especially major versions.

I do agree...
I meant about manually updating entware package to 4.99.1...and just mentioned pre-git 5.00... Razz

KP-69 i know libpcap needs to be installed first i mentioned it in my post, but there i face the trouble....
anyway i can either ask entware guys for an update or wait until it happens....
i've no desperate need to use the last tcpdump, as i'm not using it avidly anyway...
in fact lots of entware packages needs updating...not only tcpdump...

@Alozaros: My second comment was in reference to my first. Had nothing to do with your comment, whatsoever. Sorry for the confusion, folks.
