What routers have the least issues, work the best and are any makers supporting DDWRT or loading it from new now?

Thanks

I presume the stickies are not obvious enough, nor is the FAQ in the wiki.

yep as KP69 posted...those links..

To my understanding...best router ...what for...ISP connection provided...general use...
For my Grandma best router would be 1043v2 - light VPN 10Mbit/,vlan's, ISP 100-150Mbit
For basic need/home use/ VPN 30-40Mbit/vlan's it would be Netgear R7000 - ISP 250-300Mbit
For more performance, vlan's, QoS, VPN 90Mbit/WG up to 150Mbit +, ISP 500Mbit+ it would be Netgear R7800 / XR450/ XR500
For max performance Netgear R9000 / XR700 - no vlan's (only SFP port could be segmented as a separate vlan), great VPN 150Mbit+ /WG 200Mbit + and QoS, as it has a quad core cpu..
For ultimate performance use x86 /x64 box, there the sky is the limit...

apart of the x86 /x64 box, i have all of the above routers... Embarassed

Netgear R7800 the darling of the community Smile

Some months ago I bought the last new one which could be found here in the Netherlands E 160 (about $ 140) they rebranded it to a NetGEar XR500 and doubled the price (well it has DUmaOS and more RAM I think but otherwise identical )

sry egc to clear the confusion XR700 is re-boxed R9000, where XR500 is re-boxed R7800...yep both XR500, XR700 are running DumaOS and have a different router box but same SoC (cpu's) as R9000 and R7800...

egc i hope you got XR700 just to make me envy... Laughing Laughing Laughing

I'm still stuck at "let's have yet another thread about what routers to buy". There is no need for this thread, whatsoever. It's not about freedom to discuss, it's about read the stickies and stop asking redundant questions, which is what Donny and all the old mods got sick and tired of dealing with. It's a waste of resources.

Anyhow, grumpy guy aside... the XR700 is a waste of time IMHO. Neither stock firmware, Voxel, or DD-WRT will make the cooling fan work, so that whole experiment resulted in returning the thing. It's not easy to find the XR450, but the XR500 is worth the $$$ if you cannot find a used R7800.

It's a running target, in the very same thread you are recommending a particular model you are saying it's disappearning..LOL

A year from now what is going to be the best one?

Perhaps it's time for dd-wrt to approach Netgear about a tie-in? I see a lot of junk advertising in the ad-box windows on the dd-wrt site about charcoal grills, tv shows, and credit cards - but none from any network gear makers let alone from the network gear makers that are making product that we are using.

I would think a network gear maker who was getting business steered their way by advertising on a router project site might possibly have a bit more interest in continuing to ensure that their new product remained compatible with said router project.

Just a thought...

The best one is subjective to how well it works and the less issues/bugs.

But you are right, the next shiny thing is always just that, doesn't equal worth it, until code has matured, this matters for stability + function, because development for a supporting a N amount of existing routers is not easy... + the new kid on the block which may or not be possible due to other factors, like private sdks, toolchains and NDA's to build/install their binaries...

If only there was just opensource, it can also be sold gpl allows this so Corporations making devices dont have to lose out on sales + reduced support burden for machines running 3rd party FW has to be a positive hit on the bottom line.... Instead... After 5 years you get no more updates. Hows that for shiny next new thing?

Rambles on...

Sorry. Shocked

One of the two mods in this thread need to make this moving target disappear. Because Wifi6 support in DD-WRT is still a long ways off and the current WiFi5 recommendations will stand the test of time until then. Hence why I have a severe disdain for topics like this. It's not a matter of freedom of speech. It's a matter of stop beating a dead horse, read the wiki and the sticky and quit asking.

There should be a recommended hardware thread, I like the post by @Alozaros. All which router to buy should be redirected to it.

Question is asked often, but ignore this. You were given three threads already, very first reply.

Recommended: R7800 (XR450/XR500), R9000 (R8900/XR700), R7500v2, EA8500 (serial flash)

XR450/XR500 doubles flash & ram minus SATA port. Very good thoughts @tedm and @thejoker.

Can you not see and read the stickies in this area of the forum? Info has also been added to the wiki. For Pete's sake, how more obvious does it need to be?
