hi,

2 issues

=======
issue 1
=======

i had the r8500 working fine (i thought i had a problem but it was an isp outage).

so i did a 30 30 30 reset and i cant get the wifi working again.

i have followed the guide here... just as i did before but this time it did not fix the wifi not broadcasting problem.

https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=1169279#1169279

this is exactly was i did
1. 303030 reset
2. flashed to manufacturers 1st f/w release
3. flashed to factory-to-dd-wrt in the dd-wrt 201607-20-2016-r30260 ftp
4. flashed to dd-wrt 201607-20-2016-r30260
5. followed the above guide to the letter, except i uploaded the cfe8500.bin with winscp not telnet
6. flashed to dd-wrt 202103-31-2021-r46220
7. i did also use another guide that i can no longer find on the forum... where you added some commands to the startup in the admin-->commands setting and maybe something else in there too but i dont know what it was other than.

sleep 20; stopservice nas; wlconf eth1 down; wlconf eth2 down; wlconf eth1 up; wlconf eth2 up; startservice nas

anyone find this guide i cant anymore?, it may or may not have been talking about r7000 in this guide?

=======
issue 2
=======

the max speed has always been 120mb/s on dd-wrt (on LAN as well as wifi i think) even though i have 500mb/s download

if it is a lan problem anyone know how to fix?

anyone know the best settings to get the best out of the wifi? i got 280mb/s on stock firmware? it just cant seem to find the correct settings?

--------------------

i would really, really, really appreciate any help

thx

DD-WRT wiki says do not 30/30/30 reset ARM routers, see wikidevi. https://wikidevi.wi-cat.ru/Netgear_R8500
Netgear's website R8500 hardware reset is five to seven seconds, references R8500 FAQ and User Manual pdf.

It is never a good idea to reset during a web upgrade. To clarify, if upgrading within DD-WRT Web GUI:
Administration -> Firmware Upgrade -> "After flashing, reset to" leave dropdown selected "Don't reset"

I do not believe you needed to r30260 webupgrade as the resulting install from factory-to-dd-wrt is the same.
Did you save and compare CFE backup with new download? Sorry, I do not have this router (R7800, EA8500).

This might be the thread you were talking about: Effective workarounds for bridged VAPs not working at boot.
Need a better description to show exactly what is broken also your current wifi configuration not auto channel.

You might want to try new build from this past month after confirming functional wifi and settings are retained.

OK.

something weird is going on, normally when i...

1. 303030 reset
2. flash with netgear initial f/w release
3. flash with factory-to-dd-wrt in the dd-wrt 201607-20-2016-r30260 ftp
4. flash with dd-wrt 201607-20-2016-r30260
5. still have wifi ALWAYS at this point
6. flash to dd-wrt 202103-31-2021-r46220
7. this is where wifi normally disappears to i have to do the https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=1169279#1169279 fix
8. but this time the wifi is still working this time?!?!?!?!? same files as the 1st time i did this, nothing changed. totally confused?

now comes the BUT if i now flash to 202109-17-2021-r47461 netgear-r8500-webflash.bin did NOT use the factory-to-dd-wrt 1st from the ftp folder 202109-17-2021-r47461 (should i have?)??

NOW the wifi disappears?

i have no idea what is going on.

so i did the above guide to fix...

ok till i got to the point where you type - erase nvram - all you get is ding sound from windows and a new clear line no error as if it worked but why the ding? normally get output as - Flash is NAND - and on - erase nvram - cmd again new line no error but ding sound again, so im guessing it did not work? as the wifi was still not working.

please anyone help...

hi, i dont have the original cfe8500.bin as i used the telnet command, this time i scp'd to the same location from the hdd that the cmd says.

is there any reason mostly from a security / vulnerability point of view why i should update the firmware from..

202103-31-2021-r46220

as the wifi is working and on

201607-20-2016-r30260

it is not?

also you pointed out something, when i was updating the dd-wrt firmware

After flashing, reset to" leave dropdown selected "Don't reset"

i was doing the reset option everytime. so now i know. should i a reset after the flash succeeds? or is it not necessary?

any tips for issue 2 with the max wifi being 120mb/s when the stock ng f/w was getting 280mb/s?

thx

It would be simpler just to find a used R7800 or new XR500. These devices are plagued with issues.

Factory-to-ddwrt is for stock firmware. Do not reset during webupgrade. Factory Defaults should be okay.

After restoring with r30260, do not reset during webupgrade to r47474 and you should have working wifi.

jptech build thread reported r47256, again "After flashing, reset to" leave dropdown selected "Don't reset"
