Other Symptoms: Can't access the unit via configured IP after some time of usage. Router still works but UI and SSH don't work, despite being configured fine.
----------
Appears fixed in 47256.
Ping works and so does that UI tab.
On the flip side, selecting an Operating Mode under the Setup -> Advanced Routing -> Operating Mode no longer works. Keeps default setting of what was chosen either with the earlier firmware or what the FW originally came with. Can't change it.
Screen simply refreshes and reverts to the previously saved selection.
------------
Appears all these items are non issues in 44715 version w/ RT-AC88U .
Is there anyway to report issues on FW using a tally such as a table with these entries?
Spoke too soon though. httpd still fails and ospf is a bit... flaky .... doesn't see my other Asus RT-AC68U's w/ FRRouting on then (vtysh).

Thought I would report, a kernel panic w/ FW 46380.
And why did you NOT report this in the build thread?
Had more then one kernel that I was trying. Wasn't sure if it was appropriate to muddy the waters with this drawn out troubleshooting discussion on a thread meant for a single FW version. I'm open to move this topic there if you feel it's better suited there. No worries at all.

Ah right I guess you could see it that way too . But it was more of an ask rather then a request to build anything. What I was really asking, and should have asked, is how does DD-WRT determine which versions are stable for including in the FW database. The fact that certain FW versions are included and other's aren't made me think there might be something akin to what I suggested above that already helps folks determine what is considered stable. Not implying anything though I admit, I only have myself to blame with the wording I chose.
Back to the router topic. Sometimes I can access the router and somtimes I can't. The firmware update doesn't appear to be uploaded and burnt 100% each time. Difficult for me to get in there to execute the rest of the commands. Will try tomorrow. _________________ Cheers, TK

If you have not already read the forum guidelines, please do !!
You can upgrade from the command line, there is a wiki about that.
Some interface problems especially regarding switch page are resolved in later builds.

If this is on home-brew builds, IRT to your trying different kernels comment, not much we can do for support. Sounds like you're mixing and matching things, perhaps? As far as what determines which builds are in the router database, that is a good question; but the answer is usually when a well-agreed upon / well-reported "stable" build across the board is determined, then the database is updated. _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"

Using the Firmware recovery tool from Asus, upload fails at roughly 73% for any firmware I choose. The portion that does upload still gives me a gui and most functionality however, there are instability issues thereafter. The two versions I'm focusing on now are these:
Neither of which are uploading fully neither through the Asus recovery tool or the DD-WRT UI.
What I'm interested in is to perhaps try to entirely erase any firmware and run some diagnostics on the unit to get a better idea what is going wrong but have no idea what tools are available to do so on a router with limited functionality (I do manage to get SSH up and working through what ever does upload). Not sure I have other options left. Probably need the CFE miniWeb but not sure what to do to force that at this point.
that you provided blkt. Try as I might, I couldn't find the AC88U specific recovery software off the page. Even searching the loaded and expanded page for 'recovery' yielded NOTHING. Tried under Drivers & Tools and Bios & Firmware and nothing. Then while writing this I find it under 'Restoration' which then downloads a file with 'Rescue' in the name.
(facepalm)
Ugh, WTF. Anyway.... How's your morning?
Back to the topic. Whenever I try to upload a new version of a firmware, using the DD-WRT Firmware Upgrade page, I brick the router but at least now I have a way to recover it using the tool above. ( Thank You! ) Steps that I take for each attempt. or try too:
1) Using the recovery tool you provided blkt, I upload a new version ( 47256 ). This succeeds 100% of the time with this restoration utility you provided.
2) Run the following tests on all routers I test:
a) Enable SSH and test.
b) Enable and setup Wifi incl/ security etc both 2.4 and 5.0
c) Change IP, Pass
d) Setup OSPF. Test OSPF (vtysh) from the command line.
e) Add F/W Rules and test.
f) Try to reflash the router using THE SAME F/W as what's on the router. ( 47256 )
g) Setup DHCP Forwarding and test.
h) Setup NTP and test.
i) Setup HTTPS and test.
j) Add USB Storage
k) Install utilities using opkg such as strongswan, if applicable.
L) Setup automatic reboots via commands or UI. ( Daily reboot helps in case of memory leaks )
m) Configure access lists.
3) Step f) always fails w/ 47256 for me. Bricks the routers and I end up back at step 1 recovering it. ( So far repeated the above 3 times )
4) Repeat failing steps w/ another F/W version.
So still figuring this out. _________________ Cheers, TK

Mini cfe webserver via restoration mode or restoration tool; CLI flash upgrades. People have had plenty of issues flashing upgrades via webUI, from stock and DD-WRT and if you *are* selecting reset to defaults on the firmware upgrade page, don't. This is fairly well documented on Asus devices, although the device wiki isn't complete, save and except pointing you to the device forum thread. _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"

Nah I have Windows 10. Using Chrome 92.0.4515.159. Avoiding the use of Windows Explorer or EDGE (aka Microsoft's copy of Mozilla) for the time being.
Funny thing, I left the router alone for a bit and it seems to have liked me more after that. Appears I wasn't giving it enough time after updating the FW. I can use the UI to update the FW to newer or older versions now. Hmm.

But again, the rescue tool is working so what are you trying to do to the router? Spock is smashing things.
Decided to get some new toys so putting them through their paces.

Do not reset with that dropdown option.
Noted. Though I didn't reset to default using Advanced -> Factory Defaults yet. Didn't seem like the right thing to do and your confirmation proved I was right. I'll use the WPS button or just reset to recovery (Turn power off, press and hold reset for 10 seconds after powering on) to do that.
I'm putting a few of these versions to the test as we speak. I'll print the results in a few. _________________ Cheers, TK

Is the best way to recover firmware on the AC88U. Despite Asus having:
Rescue_2102.zip
listed under the AC88U support page, that copy cancels half way bricking the router.
My testing results for the various firmware versions is below:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: I had to give this router ample time to boot up for each test. Also had to remember when removing DHCP that I have to manually assign an IP.
47256 - Generally works for all of the above tests however can't select OSPF or other Advanced Routing operating modes.
47225 - Generally works for all of the above tests however can't select OSPF or other Advanced Routing operating modes.
47206 - Eventually this router came up with this firmware. Setting OPSF worked. It took some time for this router to come up though with this firmware. Random ping
timeouts were seen.

After I applied all router settings, the above issue disappeared.
Updating the FW to 47256 worke from the Firmware Upgrade tab. Downgrading down to this version 47206 also worked.
Was missing 5GHZ Wireless setup page? wl0 and wl1 was missing as well?
Tried reimaging to fix this once all my settings were applied. Not able to fix. Touched lot's of knobs. No luck, not even after restarts.
