The problem is, the file you have is likely not a trailed build and may not be one that <Kong> released that supported that router. I am not at home at the moment, so I don't have the old supported models text file to reference.

The file I have is

dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC_ARM_STD.bin

Date: March 6, 2017

I believe this file was intended both for the 56U and 68U models.

Would you recommend flashing it directly?

That should be the correct file. I used Kong builds in the past on AC68Us. Why do you want to use such an old build?

Build dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC_ARM_STD.bin supports:
#################################################
ASUS_AC56U
ASUS AC67U
ASUS AC68U
----
#################################################

Note:

- *.bin files can only be flashed from dd-wrt webif.
- *.chk can be flashed from Netgear factory fw and from dd-wrt webif

- I don't provide factory to dd-wrt for non Netgear models since I do not own any non Netgear Broadcom units

Need serial output from your A2 version on stock firmware and DD-WRT to see what is breaking and give BrainSlayer an idea of how to fix it or add specific support for this device.

Can you post a link for generating the serial output as I have no experience in that area. I assume I will have to buy additional hardware and void the warranty?

To answer the previous post, I want to flash this old kongac build because SoftEther functionality was removed from newer builds. I am running this as a SoftEther client.

@whitefish i do still keep the one before the last one of the Kong's bulds(39960M dated 06-08-2019 and 38580M dated 04-01-2019) for AC68U.
Let me know if you need it but i don't remember anything about that SoftEther though.
On the side note,as @wabe already pointed out i also don't recommend using those old builds.

1) You can use Entware to run SoftEther if you must have it.

2) Look up "serial recovery dd-wrt wiki" in your search engine of choice.

3) I am out of spoons.

I believe the wiki states that you have to flash a Brainslayer build first, then update to a Kong build through the GUI.

Personally, I would not run a build that old....

Can you get into the Mini CFE by first doing a WPS Reset -
Turn the router off, then back on while holding the WPS button on the side until the power light starts flashing. Release the WPS button, then turn the router off. Hold down the reset button on the back and keep holding it down while powering the router on. Hold the reset button in until the power light starts flashing slowly. You should be able to access the Web CFE by going to 192.168.1.1

From there, I would clear NVRAM, and then flash the latest version of ddwrt from here: https://dd-wrt.com/support/other-downloads/?path=betas%2F2021%2F08-19-2021-r47206%2Fasus-rt-ac68u%2F

The router should reboot and within a couple minutes, come up to the web interface at 192.168.1.1

From there you can set the username and password, and then configure the router.

Yes, I understand that the kongac bin file cannot be flashed directly. That is why I had flashed the latest Shibby build for the RT-68U which ended up bricking the router such that even the recovery mode (holding reset while plugging in power until the power light slowly flashes) would not work. The factory ended up sending me a new router under warranty - looks like the factory couldn't even flash the router anymore

Someone pointed out that the CPU on this router is an old CPU. I believe that these newer builds are not supported by my router. Which build would you recommend I try to be able to flash the old kongac build? There is a very old Brainslayer build listed on http://elatov.github.io/2014/11/dd-wrt-on-asus-rt-ac68u-router/ that I may try. Also someone requested that I get the serial data before flashing. I do not know how to get the serial data (without voiding the warranty). I am open to suggestions.

PayPal me the cost of a brand new one and I will do it. I'm not spending $130 to $150 plus shipping for giggles.

It is a new router so why should it support only older builds???

I would assume it would only run newer builds.

I would just follow the advice of @Mysticgold04

Flashing the latest dd-wrt build is exactly what I did. Please read my initial post.

So if someone can recommend a dd-wrt build that should be safe to flash I am all ears. This would be used so that I can flash the kongac build which is a bin file. I do realize that the kongac build is old but it does run fine on my RT-56U routers which appear to use similar processors.

Blind recommendation, if you are dead set on not cracking open your router and providing serial output.

Thank you for the help. I was able to flash the 2014 DDWRT via the CFE interface and subsequently the kongac build which supports SoftEther.

Everything works except the 2.4 GHz is not properly supported. When a client connects the router freezes.

I did try various wireless settings in the GUI to no avail so I had to disable 2.4 GHz.

Many thanks to all.
