a question so basic, I am afraid to ask. but here goes:

my firmware file is named dd-wrt.v24-46885_NEWD-2_K3.x-big-RT-N66U.trx

I understand the build number, and the router name obviously.

But what does v24 mean?
what does NEWD-2 mean?
and what about K3???

I always thought K3 was the kernel version, but the kernel is actually 4.4.271.

thanks!

(update: I found an old post that claims:
NEWD = Kernel K2.4.37 and wl driver = 4.150.10.31
NEWD2 = Kernel K2.4.37 and wl driver = 4.150.66.6

but that doesn't seem to make sense in this context)

The v24 part of the filename was left there for whatever reason, but my best guess is that the last "stable" build was v2.4 (in 2008), so it is what it is. For the kernel version, see the following thread:

ok, i read through that thread. But it doesn't answer my question.

why does the filename say K3.x when it installs a version 4 kernel?

is it just a mistake in the filename, or does the "K" signify something other than Kernel?

It's the same thing as the v24 in the filename. Neither the folder nor filename was changed from K3.x to K4.x. Getting confused over trivial filename nuances is kind of silly. That thread was letting the community know that the Broadcom MIPS devices were shifting kernel versions for the K3.x images. I guess I can email the powers that be and Chicken Little the filename issues, but it will probably do no good.

I think there are still some on Kernel 3 so you should read it that K3 is Kernel 3 or higher Smile

Case closed?
