After a number of failed attempts, I have successfully restored the factory firmware. Several suggestions:
1) use a switch between the computer and A7. Otherwise the computer will drop the connection when the A7 is rebooted and it will not come back on soon enough. A 2nd router's lan ports can be used as a switch regardless of the router's configuration, since the IP addresses are static.

2) Make sure the switch and computer are connecting with 1Gbps speeds. A 100Mbps connection takes too long for the tftp transfer and the A7 times out. I had a laptop with a 1Gbps lan, but it was only connecting at 100Mbps and it failed every time.

3) Make sure the file name on the tftp server side is correct. The A7 looks for the exact filename.

I don't have a switch but I have another a7 router... I'll do it from the factory too and I'll see how I can configure it as a switch... the address 192.168.0.66 where do I put it on my laptop? or to the 2nd router that I will use as a switch?

You do not have to make any changes to the 2nd A7. Just plug both the computer and the target A7 LAN port into LAN ports on the 2nd router. The 2nd router will function as a switch and pass traffic between the computer an target A7. You need to set the IP address on your computer to 192.168.0.66 as the instructions say.

The 2nd router is simply sitting between the target A7 and the computer and acting as a switch to maintain the computer connection so it does not drop.

The process looks good - the transfer completed to 100% and the file size looks correct.

You might try loading dd-wrt r42729 before the recovery. That's the version I have been using and recovering from.

Also, you might try tftp recovery to Openwrt and see if that works. the Openwrt binary is smaller. You'll need to rename the file as with dd-wrt recovery.

ok first I'll try to downgrade to the r42729 version and I'll do it from there... if it doesn't work I'll try the 2nd option, in fact I wanted to install the stock version to install the latest openwrt because they're asking me with that firmware
