I decided to see what this looked like on an old but reliable HP laptop (EliteBook 8440p). I followed the install instructions at https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/X86 and installed to a dedicated usb flash drive using physdiskwrite-0.5.3 from the command line (tried physdiskwrite GUI per https://m0n0.ch/wall/physdiskwrite.php but that errored out in German). I'd also tried to add it to a multiboot usb but failed to guess a compatible boot format.
I can't test it thoroughly yet with the public version (no wifi) since this laptop has just one ethernet port, but I might order a usb to ethernet adapter or even a pc-card to ethernet adapter if I can find one that's compatible. Or, maybe I should try using a second ethernet port on a docking station simultaneously, but I think that normally disconnects the on-board ethernet port.
I'm also considering an upgrade to dd-wrt full/registered version (although hesitant because I'll probably change devices even if I decide to run x86-64 regularly), but all my potential donor x86 machines have Intel wifi anyway.
Questions:
1) Does a paid/full version go with one machine, or could I move it freely between different machines?
2) Does x86 still require Qualcomm/Atheros wifi? I could get an Intel AX210 if it would help. I still have a mothballed but potentially usable Dell Latitude D610 with dock that might actually have an Atheros wifi card (possibly a Dell/Atheros DW1601 QCA9005 802.11ad card), but it's not here. What are some compatible modern Qualcomm/Atheros cards (ideally WiFi 6E with 6GHz if I'm going to buy new, but at least wpa3) that would likely be supported in my non-Dell (mostly HP) PCs? I noticed that Qualcomm's site does not list wpa3 for qca9984. Is that accurate? _________________ My DD-WRT Routers:
