I am configuring a new DD-WRT box as a router. Stats:
Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r46316 std (04/09/21)
Hardware: Asus RT-AC56U/Broadcom BCM4708A0

When I went to the Setup/Switch Config screen the default had the WAN port on VLAN2 and the LAN ports on VLAN1, and then both had "LAN" in the "Assigned to bridge" column.

As I understand bridging (which may be outdated) this would put the WAN and LAN on the same network, right? At the same time this is an unlikely default setting, and some poking at the router with that default setting seemed to indicate that the router wasn't actually bridging those two interfaces. Looking up ("Assigned to Bridge" VLAN) didn't show anything that seemed to explain this.

I don't want to put this in "production" until I understand what is going on here

I'm fairly certain that both being assigned to LAN bridge only happens when it it configured as a switch or wired access point, unless the default configuration *is* bad, which changing the WAN port to 'None' should have no adverse affects, I would think:

Thanks. I just wanted to make sure I knew what was going on and not stick with "I think this should be set to this...", especially for a main gateway/firewall that will be exposed. Much of my knowledge is 20+ years old and things do change.

Must be some funkiness with this particular (new) user + (less common) model + version - I did have it set as gateway and loaded default config at flash time.

There are a lot of (mostly cosmetic) issues that have not been fully addressed with default configurations. It's the by-product of this firmware supporting several hundred different devices. The nuances and confusion level are a given.
