I thought my Netgear WNR3500Lv1 was bricked so I busted out my TTL cable and followed the instructions here (https://www.myopenrouter.com/comment/36891). Given that I had a K3.x build on there before I TFTP'd (https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2021/02-04-2021-r45677/broadcom_K3X/dd-wrt.v24-45677_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-WNR3500L.chk) which seems to be the latest that is still under the ~7.3MB limit. After reboot I hit Ctr+C in Putty and ran
Code:
nvram erase
and rebooted again. My first clue that something wasn't right was that the SSID was still coming up as the old SSID:

Q: Does nvram erase not do a factory reset?

I was able to login to the dd-wrt admin page through wifi though even though my LAN ports were dead. The Power LED was Orange solid and the WPS was green solid. I found this thread (https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=313111&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=30) and none of that resolved my issues.

To check, I downloaded the latest netgear official firmware and flashed that using tftp and the LAN ports all work fine in that build, but as soon as I went back to dd-wrt it was a no go.

I never had to mess with VLAN settings before so I don't know what is different. I've tried flashing (https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2017/10-20-2017-r33555/broadcom_K26/dd-wrt.v24-33555_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-WNR3500L.chk) from the Netgear firmware, which was successful but no LAN ports, then I flashed ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2017/10-20-2017-r33555/broadcom_K3X/dd-wrt.v24-33555_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega.bin, from dd-wrt with reset but still no go.

I have done a factory reset from within dd-wrt and a 30/30/30 reset but none of that brings back my LAN ports. Ideas?

Another question that is related, but I can't seem to find an answer for is exactly how large the maximum file size is in order to not go over the Flash Memory limit for this device. (https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Netgear_WNR3500L) just says "smaller than ~7.3 MB" and that's not very precise. I thought I had seen somewhere where someone calculated the exact flash memory available but in all of my searching I can't find the post. dd-wrt.v24-33555_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega.bin is 7,606,272B which is 7.253MB but
dd-wrt.v24-46259_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-WNR3500L.chk which is the newest available build is 7,733,306B which is 7.375MB... So the question is what is the exact limit for file size to flash? If I flash this latest build and it's too large does it cause these problems? If it is too large, why are their builds that say 3500L still being posted?

I was able to get my lan ports back by changing:
- Setup > Networking > Port Setup > WAN Port assignment to VLAN1
- Setup > Switch Config > VLAN 2 to check all boxes and "Assigned to bridge" set to LAN.

If I set the WAN Port assignment to VLAN2 then I lose my LAN ports again. It's unclear to me what is driving the misconfiguration since I never had to mess with any of this before.

The WAN port is supposed to be VLAN2, the LAN ports are supposed to be VLAN1. Reset to defaults and correct that.

Also, a good idea is to flash via command line per the installation wiki on this device, that way you should know if the image is too big to flash, unless the firmware size check is bunked.

Resetting to defaults doesn't resolve the problem. I manually set the WAN port to VLAN2 and then in the switching set all the ports to VLAN1 and it still works. The problem, it seems was when both WAN port and LAN ports are all set on the same VLAN. This again, was persisting across factory resets.

This is a known issue. You have to fix the WAN and LAN port assignments to the proper VLANs (VLAN2 for WAN, VLAN1 for LAN) over wifi if you can't get a connection via wired ethernet. This should be able to be done on the VLANs / Switch Config page, otherwise you correct it via CLI using the Switched Ports Wiki as a guide. I guess the implied obvious solution wasn't quite understood.
