Hi,

I want to convert my Ubiquity Unifi AC Mesh (UAP-AC-M) to dd-wrt.

Unfortunately its not clear for me which software needs to be flashed and if an activation is required

which one of these two possibilites is the correct one?

https://dd-wrt.com/support/router-database/?model=Unifi%20AP%20AC%20Outdoor_- (Activation required)

or the latest beta e.g.:
https://dd-wrt.com/support/other-downloads/?path=betas%2F2021%2F03-21-2021-r46130%2Fubnt_UAP-AC-MESH%2F -- is there an activation required?

Thanks in advance!
BR

Supported devices and router database are not updated, but assume ubnt_UAP-AC-MESH folder is correct.

It appears all Ubiquiti need a professional activation license. I would contact them to confirm the model.

According to the openWRT Wiki the UAP-AC-M uses a Qualcomm Atheros QCA9563 CPU wheras the this https://dd-wrt.com/support/router-database/?model=Unifi%20AP%20AC%20Outdoor_- uses a BCM4706

yeah need definately a confirmation which on is the right FW

The router database is pointing to a different folder, ubnt_UAP-AC, assume those pages are outdated.

Folder ubnt_UAP-AC-MESH is likely to be what you need, but always good to confirm.

I don't know why you are comparing different models. The UAP-AC Outdoor is not the UAP-AC-M.

https://wikidevi.wi-cat.ru/Ubiquiti_Networks_UniFi_AP_AC_(UAP-AC)

https://www.ui.com/unifi/unifi-ap-ac-outdoor/

https://store.ui.com/collections/unifi-network-access-points/products/unifi-ac-mesh-ap

EDIT: There is obviously some confusion, and not sure if the Mesh is the 'v2' or what. This is why I don't generally do custom firmware on Ubitquiti.

because they are often sold as Unifi AC Outdoor, this Model is pretty confusing
but its now evident that my model is UAP-AC-M

Not your fault, assume router database and supported devices are old models and defining term is M for Mesh.

I would still contact to confirm because the ubnt_UAP-AC-MESH folder has two installer binaries and text files.

Both similar yet different and upgrade files are the installers, very confusing so have to ask a full explanation.

Once installed correctly with the hardware version you have, upgrade file is UAP-AC-M-webflash-firmware.bin.

Hello tomron,

I also want to flash my UAP-AC-M with dd-wrt.
To what extent do the two bin files differ and which one is the right one?
What is your experience with stability, speed, etc.?

Thanks and greetings,
Martin

I never contacted anyone to ask about it, but you are free to use the contact link above.
If I had to guess flash-upgrade.bin is for v1 and flash-upgrade.bin.bin is for v2 <shrug>.
Also, read the text files even though may add more to the confusion as same file name.

Another guess UniFi AC Mesh is v1 and UniFi AC Mesh Pro is v2? Really, I have no idea.
Maybe v2 references Ubiquiti FW "obscure security and flash protection mechanisms..."
Bottom line, contact to confirm as model names and files do not match folders or texts.

hello blkt,

thanks for your answer.

Yes, unfortunately the whole thing is a bit confusing.
I am also not aware that there are two different hardware versions, just two different AC Mesh models: UAP-AC-M and UAP-AC-M-PRO

I have the UAP-AC-M and wouldn't like to brick it either.
Unfortunately, I have not (yet) received an answer to an e-mail.
Is there another way to contact someone from the team?

Thanks and greetings,
Martin

Hi there!
I also have a UAP-AC-M that I would like to install DD-WRT on...have you heard back from anyone? Have you tried any of the above firmware?

Thanks!

I digged a little deeper in this topic.

OpenWRT is faster on that topic and it's now for sure UAP-AC-M is in fact UAP-AC-MESH which uses following HW features:

Code:

Model         UniFi AC Mesh
SoC         Qualcomm Atheros QCA9563
CPU          775MHz
Flash          16MB
RAM          128MB
WLAN Hardware           Qualcomm Atheros QCA9563, Qualcomm Atheros QCA988x
WLAN2.4         b/g/n
WLAN5.0         a/n/ac
Gbit ports      1
USB         -

Source: https://openwrt.org/toh/ubiquiti/unifiac

so basically this should be the right SW (current release r50357) https://dd-wrt.com/support/other-downloads/?path=betas%2F2022%2F10-05-2022-r50357%2Fubnt_UAP-AC-MESH%2F

anybody courageous enough to try it out?

so I tried to flash my UAP-AC-M

I followed the instructions in the download folder

Code:

1.
copy with scp/winscp flash-upgrade to 192.168.1.20:/tmp
2.
login with ssh/putty to 192.168.1.20 and change directory to /tmp (cd /tmp)
3.
execute the following command
mtd -f write flash-upgrade.bin kernel0 && mtd -f write flash-upgrade.bin kernel1

once you need to recover, you need to reinstall the original ubiquiti firmware using the reset button recovery method.

then just start again. there is no direct installation way using tftp recovery since ubiquiti implemented a encrypted signature check (RSA)

so I transfered the flash-upgrade.bin to the /tmp folder via WinSCP
I ssh'ed in with Putty and copied and executed the given command

Code:
mtd -f write flash-upgrade.bin kernel0 && mtd -f write flash-upgrade.bin kernel1

the following response i got and obviously no flashing was done

Code:
UBNT-BZ.v4.3.21# cd tmp
UBNT-BZ.v4.3.21# ls
TZ                 lib                resolv.conf.auto   sysinfo
default.cfg        lock               run                sysinit.txt
dropbear           log                running.cfg        system.cfg
etc                rc.txt             shm                tmp
flash-upgrade.bin  resolv.conf        state              utermd
UBNT-BZ.v4.3.21# mtd -f write flash-upgrade.bin kernel0 && mtd -f write flash-up
grade.bin kernel1
-ash: mtd: not found

anybody able to assist me in the flash procedure?
