I've noticed in the last couple of releases that it mentions Plex in the changlogs.

Does this mean that DD-WRT can now support Plex media server integration?

The R9000 stock firmware has Plex Media Server integrated, so it would be really good to be able to run DD-WRT and be able to get Plex server too.

Also out of curiosity, I wonder if DD-WRT integration, if possible would open this feature up to other routers such as the R7800.

A way to verify is flash of the past few releases and check file system or Web GUI, but may not exist.

Changeset r45999 - "for testing, need to discuss with plex maintainers if they agree about integration"

I cannot find anything on R7800 running r46130 but cannot recommend this build, too many problems.

I have build with Plex and it is huge.

I exceeded the maximum build size for my R6400.
So perhaps it will only come for x86?

Maybe R9000, 512MB Flash size, I see an arm(armv7) source folder and that could be for Alpine AL-514. =)

That doesn't look good for the R7800 then.
The R6400 and R7800 have 128MB flash size.
The R9000 has 512MB flash size.

It should be able to fit on a 128MB flash size, as Plex Server is approx 78MB (depending on file integration) and DD-WRT is approx 30MB.
So it would depend on the user having any other items needed to be installed, as there will be no space for anything else.

Personally, I just have DD-WRT and an adblock script, so I'd rather have Plex Server (or at least try it out) than any other add-ons, so it would be good to test it out.

How do you get to test it?
I have an R7800 and currently running Plex server on an Nvidia Shield 2019 (not connected to a TV, literally just used for the server.
TV is connected to a Roku Ultra (new 4800 model) with Plex client. All direct streaming, no transcoding, so if I can add it to my router, I can get rid of the Nvidia Shield.

My 2-cents...

I ran a Plex server on a low-powered NAS for a while. It worked... but wasn't really satisfactory - just not enough CPU horsepower. Moved the server over to a Windows machine (AMD FX-8310) and am much happier.

Without transcoding, it was disabled correct?

My first reaction was Laughing. No transcoding.

Unlike many Plex users, I rarely used it for video. Some video formats would not work - perhaps because of no transcoding. I am not sure that transcoding was even an option on the NAS platform. Using mainly as a music server was frustrating enough.

Don't misunderstand, I think Plex (and Tidal integration) is great but don't anticipate it will be a good experience, except (possibly) on powerful routers. We'll see. YMMV.

Transcoding not 'disabled' as there is no direct setting for this, but have everything set as direct play, or original stream.

You only need a powerful PC if the TV or device you're playing the content on cannot cope with the original video and has to transcode.

My 4K Dolby Vision Sony TV is able to play all video types without transcoding.
The only thing that attempts to transcode is TrueHD audio and DTS-HD audio, so I simply change the Audio track to a non-lossless audio and everything direct streams perfectly smooth.

Doing it without the need for transcoding is just like playing a video direct from your NAS with any generic media player.
Roku doesn't support Kodi otherwise I'd try that for local media playback.

Stock R9000 can do at least 480p for mobile, and a claim is similar performance to Netgear RN214.

Transcoding is enabled by default, also audio streams or music can be transcoded as well.

I have been running my plex server on my Nvidia Sheild model from 2017. It runs great as a plex server with a 2TB USB 3.0 drive attached to the USB port. It streams 4k movies beautifully. The Nvidia shield can handle video transcoding very efficiently due to the onboard Nvidia GPU. I could be wrong but not sure that most routers will be able to perform this video transcoding as efficiently due to a lack of a GPU.

Which is why I was asking if transcoding was disabled, and likely x86 only unless we get lucky with R9000...

Has there been any progress on this?

And is there at least potential to have Plex integration for the R9000? That has it in stock firmware.

I know other routers are unlikely to be able to handle it.

I'm due to to be getting an R9000 from a friend who's got a new router, so kindly passing it on to me.

I was hoping to use DD-WRT, but still keep Plex server for basic, non-transcoding content.

Updates to plex keep getting applied, but none of the device configs in the public code repo have been updated since it was added.

How would I add Plex to the R9000 running DD-WRT?
Is it a separate Plex repository, or is it included in a separate beta firmware image?
