Have you even bothered to connect a serial interface to flash via uboot... apparently, the tftp trick doesn't always work, as I've noticed on other TP-Links recently.

AFAIK connecting a serial interface is always connected to soldering which is unfortunately beyond my technical capabilities. So, I hope there is non-soldering path to replacing the ISP's firmware with DD-WRT :)

If you can figure out how to make the adapter wires stay where they're supposed to without soldering in a header and if any pads need shorting, or if any other components are required, etc. ....

Thank you all. Is there any other thing left to try with LAN cable?

The wires can be held in place in the holes (lower right I think) with such as toothpicks.
Still the other problem remains. It might be solved by having a helper hold the wire at TP18 and TP28.

Managed to solder 4 headers (later saw that will only need 3 of them but I guess this won't be a problem). Thought that this was the biggest problem for me. Not until I searched for how to flash with serial cable... Shocked

I didn't even find out how exacly to connect the 3 wires of the serial cable to the soldered headers. Will someone please share a link - a tutorial or something to help me flash DD-WRT with serial cable because I have never ever done this before and got totally lost when searched on the topic?

Normal method of flashing via the stock firmware webUI, *but* you want to use 10-20-2017-r33555 or newer
(I would go with at least 11-03-2020-r44715 at present, but 03-12-2021-r45993 should be just fine).

https://www.instructables.com/TP-LINK-TL-WR740NND-V4-and-How-to-Install-DD-WRT-o/

Otherwise, you have to flash via serial from the bootloader using one of the above linked files, not the TL-WR703N file shown:

https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=668847#668804

More reference reading (v4.23), which includes links to OpenWRT wiki:

The above assumes that you have some hint of technical ability to tackle this. I am not responsible if you brick your router.

I am stuck when trying to follow this guide:
https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=668847#668804

1. My USB to TTL cable has 5 pins - 3 of them can be found on the router (TXD, RXD, GND) but which of the other 2 (3V3, +5V) to connect to VCC?

2. Next step from the guide is:
Once you got the serial, open a terminal with this settings:.....
Downloaded Solar-PuTTY for the first time and there is a 'Create new session' button but there are a lot of details - IP, type of connection, etc. - what details to enter?

You do NOT connect the Vcc lead or you risk frying something.

It isn't that difficult to figure out how to configure serial on PuTTY, you don't need an IP address for that...

OK, thank you, I will connect only TXD, RXD and GND.

Unfortunately I have never ever used PuTTY, so I simply do not know what to do after I connect the TTL cable.
