Just found a very old TP-Link TL-WR740N v4 which unfortunately has an ISP custom firmware installed. I have forgotten the password and cannot connect to the router’s WiFi network in order to log in and flash DD-WRT. Pressing the reset button of the router doesn’t help either. So, how to flash DD-WRT when I am virtually locked out of this router?

sounds suspicious to me...my friends son asked the same question, to take control over the router..as his dad restricted his access...
well..you can contact the ISP and obtain a password...usually if they maintain their hardware, they will refuse...and this is for a reason...
as well if you have an access to the router you can use its lan ports...no need of wi-fi password...to flash..(wifi flashing is bad idea)
otherwise...yep all TP-link routers have the way to go around this restriction and flash firmware, but ill leave this research to you..its there somewhere out in the open..do your homework..
its always good to start with more details router model and firmware running... _________________ Atheros

if you have an access to the router you can use its lan ports...
Thank you but how do I do that? I have flashed many times but always after I login into the router’s GUI. The router is TP-Link TL-WR740N v4.

I have searched but found nothing. Maybe I am missing something. I will appreciate if you give me a clue, link or at least a phrase to search for.

Normal method of flashing via the stock firmware webUI, *but* you want to use 10-20-2017-r33555 or newer
(I would go with at least 11-03-2020-r44715 at present, but 03-12-2021-r45993 should be just fine).
Thank you both. I tried this:
https://www.trishtech.com/2015/06/unbrick-tplink-wr740n-wifi-router/
but unfortunately it didn't work. No message is ever appearing on Tftpd64(portable)'s interface. Could this workaround be disabled in the ISP's custom firmware that is currently installed on the router?

Did you verify with Wireshark what the IP addresses and filenames should be? I prefer to use TFTPD32 4.52 server/client with 1024 byte anticipation window set in the settings.

orif all available tips given...now your turn...
next available tip is 'serial'...ttl to usb (last resort)
I dearly hope, you are not fulfilling fantasies, that this router will do a miracles, like VPN, QoS or any other heavy load services..as this is router for basic needs or WAP... _________________ Atheros

How did your machine get that information from wireshark? That broadcast is looking for probably the default route based on the subnet mask, and it is looking for the MAC address since that is how they will communicate.

Disabled WiFi and entered these values into the LAN IPv4 properties (change adapter options):
192.168.0.66
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.1
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
Then in Wireshark's main screen clicked on the only channel where there was any data flow (Local Area Connection).

Have you even bothered to connect a serial interface to flash via uboot... apparently, the tftp trick doesn't always work, as I've noticed on other TP-Links recently. _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"
