Not to get off subject but I had to ask mrjcd about some of the names he posted Wink :

"OMG-Deb"
"VOLUS_Earth-Orbit47-HQ"
"VOLUS_Outpost-AP48"
"Volus_Homeworld"
"fat-Deb"
"DogCow"

I am clearly not as inventive with names as you are, Cool
Need to step my game up, but where did you come up with some of them? (I am assuming the Deb ones are for Debian)

A few of my devices show up like this and have no idea how to distinguish between them.

Have you thought about by MAC address, or by looking at the ip on the device itself?

Yo lo que hago en esos casos en ponerle una IP estatica a esa MAC y ya aparece el nombre que yo quiero.

What I do in those cases is to put a static IP on that MAC and the name that I want already appears.
Cheers...

Yep, there is no other solution to the asterisk issue and its not an issue since these devices if they dont have a hostname set, will show up as asterisk, dnsmaq is flexible enough to do the job however, or set a hostnme on these devices and ensure they are sent.

Another way to do it is to assign hostnames via host files or whatever.

You might be able to use a hosts file for the upstream router's IP, but I doubt you can use a static lease to resolve that part of this issue.
