You first will need to reset the router back to factory defaults before the update on the older build.

NVRAM mappings have changed several times and will spawn gremlins if you don't.

Once you've upgraded you need to do another factory reset again to clear any mapping issues.

Then set up your settings from scratch. You cannot load old settings or they will point to old nvram mappings and spawn gremlins.

Three ways to factory reset.
1-Hold reset button ~10 seconds while router is on.
2-Reset from the admin tab in the gui
3-Telnet/SSH in to the CLI and issue: nvram erase && reboot

dumb clarification, point 3 all in lowercase

I don't run anything on USB so I cannot comment.

The last really good build to run would be 44715, but may or may not fully work with what you want to accomplish with your usb.

Kong builds are too old now to keep recommending as there have been several significant patches to security made since 2019. It's always best to run the newest build to assure you don't have any things exposed. If that kind of stuff doesn't worry you, there are plenty of people on here that use builds from several years ago and don't worry...

What is the output of lsmod on r37495M?
If the required kernel module(s) aren't in /lib/modules/$(KERNELVERSION), then it won't support it without some magic voodoo.

Hi
Cheers for the follow up my main reason to not keeping it up to date was having to re-enter settings every time.
But I think somebody stated versions after mine allowed to backup settings and reimport to new version, is that correct?

No, hardware reset or nvram erase && reboot then manually reconfigure or input settings from scratch.

Then create a new build-specific backup after save and reboot.

Why not have a look at the manual:

HI cheers for that, going through it now professionally written. As the author would you know if ver 44715 support usbip?

Also looking at the first bit of advice i am being told to do 2 factory resets! If this is correct do i have start with a first flash again then do 44715?

I am going from v3.0-r37495M kongat to the recommended 44715

Does this mean 4 flashes?

Either TFTP the .img or webflash / CLI flash the webflash.bin and be done with it. Reset to defaults and reconfigure from scratch if you run into any issues.

https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2020/11-03-2020-r44715/netgear-r7800/

I guess i need to break out my R7800 and flash this one and check to see if it supports usbip, since everything I've said so far has been moot, including this post, most likely.

Img files are for first time flash only, or recovering from a bad flash and needing to TFTP from scratch.

Otherwise only use bin files for updates. You don't need to flash 4 times.

You only need to clear nvram when going from old builds to new builds.

You're making this harder than need be.

As stated going from Kong to BS you can just use the .bin file and update via the GUI directly to the new 44715 (which actually will read as 44719)

Resetting before updating is not necessary unless you are using jffs2 then I would do it.
when in doubt it can not hurt.

The important reset is after updating.
I am a fan of doing:
Code:
nvram erase && reboot

from the CLI (telnet/putty).

Always put settings in manually, never restore from a backup (to a different build that is)

This is the full version which should have USBIP, but I cannot guarantee that it will work.

Perhaps you already did but otherwise have a look at these helpful pointers:
