So my Cable modem is an Xfinity X6 which has only 2 ethernet ports out.
1 is output for the cable box.
The other output goes to my Netgear router.
I want to do some tweaking on another Netgear router but with no more ethernet ports I was wondering.
Is it possible to use a splitter on 1 ethernet Port to get an extra connection? I suspect no but thought I would ask the experts.
If I were to run an out from my first Netgear to the second Netgear router would that be the same as a direct connection to the Xfinity X6 in terms of throughput?

The "splitter" is called a(n unmanaged) ethernet switch, and you can buy one at your friendly electronics place. I use a cheap Netgear switch that turns one port into four in my setup.

Thanks in Advance.
Depends on how fast the Netgear router in the middle is, right? If it's a dumpy, old, slow thing...
Seriously though, I do that kind of cascade here when I'm testing a router. I should clarify. The 1:4 network switch (splitter) is suitable for turning 4 LAN ports on a router into 7 ports. I'm definitely NOT suggesting you can connect two routers to a cable modem in parallel by using such a switch on the modem output. That depends on how the modem is set up internally, and as it is definitely not the use case it is designed for, I'm skeptical. Maybe someone who knows specifics can comment.
Likewise on the question of specific switch models. Beyond my experience I'm afraid. I'm no networking expert, just someone who got a couple years head start on you.
