I find no mention of this anywhere; so I'll ask.

Do the min-max fan triggers actually do anything on a X10 r9000 using r45632 (or any earlier build for that matter)?

I can't tell that the fan ever turns on even when on trigger is set well below current temperature.

I have never seen it come on when I've had mine up and running, even on stock or Voxel's firmware. Not sure where the actual sensors are that are being used, but something seems amiss.

AFAICT, mine does seem to work, but you have to play around with the temperature settings and have them really close to the normal operating temperature...

the heat sink on this thing is huge too...so it moves heat away well.

How can we read/adjust the fan's speed? I've read (quoted below from Netgear forum) that four (4) different fan speeds of 2000, 3000, 3500 and 4000 rpm are available, but I didn't see them in the r47090 webif GUI (nor stock), and couldn't find CLI commands to change them either. The dd-wrt GUI settings under the Services/Services tab can turn the fan ON/OFF at the set temperatures, but seemingly at only a very slow speed (barely perceptible with wet finger to sense airflow, although flashlight at just the right angle also confirms spinning versus stopped).

T(High-H) - This means that when the temperature reaches this thresh hold the fan will kick in at at faster speed 4000rpm
T(High-L) - This means that when the temperature reaches this thresh hold the fan will kick in at at faster speed 3500rpm
T(Low-H) - This means that when the temperature reaches this thresh hold the fan will kick in at at faster speed 3000rpm
T(Low-L) - This means that when the temperature reaches this lower thresh hold the fan will kick in on the lowest speed 2000rpm

from https://svn.dd-wrt.com/browser/src/router/rc/watchdog.c#L157 (via https://forum.openwrt.org/t/netgear-x10-r9000/3913/135)

it looks like fan speed target is ("High Temperature (FAN On)" - "highest value of cpu, wlan0, wlan1") * 400

second value in Services "Normal Temperature (FAN Off)" is not taken into account for R9000 it seems

so for example with "High Temperature (FAN On)" set to 40 and wlan0 temp at 45 deg I get 2000 rpm fan target

I checked in cli with "cat /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon0/device/fan1_target

I guess I will have to revisit this, especially after I de-brick this AX120 I now have in hand and BS gets things sorted and can start posting test images.

I have mine set at High Temp of 30C and normal temp of 20C. The fan runs continuously. (Found on the services>Services tab)

I was chasing one AX12 too...interesting, do they have a wall mount option or only desk, as well as those have a fan too, i guess its a must...as a desk only option those ax12 doesn't have very cooling friendly design...as R9000 has...

I'm tempted to cut off some side plastics on my R9000, and leave it only with that metal mesh on the top...but so far wall mounted, using only 2,4Ghz radio with fan nonstop working R9000 doesn't get hot at all.. Razz

RAX120/AX12* This was an extremely difficult find:

Sorry to raise this necro-thread from the dead, but is there a way to manually toggle the fan on the r9000 to see if it actually works?

I just recently updated to r48081 and tried setting my fan temp triggers to 30c/20c. It doesn't appear to be turning, but I haven't rebooted the router again since the reboot for the firmware upgrade (do I need to?).

Well crap, never mind. I guess it's running. For some reason I thought it had a HUYOOOOOGE fan under that mesh grill, but it's just a tiny little 40x10mm job in the middle of massive heatsink. And yeah, it's almost completely silent.

So forget I said anything :/

First time loading ddwrt, the defaults were 60/50C. Confirmed fan does work with a lower setting. And then reading those who have it running all the time?!? I'm confused.

Being a retired senior computer repair technician I know heat kills. BUT mechanic movement (friction) also kills. So a balance is the best solution. So I've always placed an external high-quality 12-18vDC running at 5V near the hottest device. Much easier to replace.

This also helps hot external USB flash drives tremendously. Let it run 24/7/365. Just enough air flow but super quiet. Fan practically lasts forever. Replace every 3+ yrs because of dust buildup. Typical: 32/35/37 (cpu, wan, wan)

Anyone know what "normal operating temperature" is? Likely it's way way above 32.
