SO, I started by looking at the router database (I know, I know, please keep reading) and noticed the recommended build was 44715. Then I went into the build threads and started poking around starting at 44715 and working my way up the chain. Coincidentally, it seemed to me that for the most part folks seemed happy with 44715 and it's very recent so I gave it a try on my R8000.
Router/Version: Netgear R8000
File/Kernel: Linux 4.4.241 #1327 SMP Tue Nov 3 09:06:16 +03 2020 armv7l
Previous/Reset: 40559/Oh hell yes!
Mode/Status: Primary Gateway/Limping
Issues/Errors: 2.4GHz Virtual Interface was not bridged although selected. Throughput okay. 5GHz settings quirky. Don't ask me to elaborate. I forgot and I'm not revisiting 40559 after the way it trashed my e4200.
All the features that I'm accustomed to using seen to work. HOWEVER, for some reason my Linux laptop refuses to connect to either or both of the 5G radios and 2.4GHz throughput is horrible. I'm talking just over 1Mb/s horrible. That's MegaBITS, not MegaBYTES. Completely unusable. SO!
I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar throughput issues with 44715?
Instead of pecking my way up the ladder (or possibly rummaging in the basement) for a build that works, can anyone recommend one that they're happy with?
And going forward, am I relatively safe to upgrade without resetting and reloading all my parameters manually every time? I've got 14 static IP leases, 3 port forwards, custom routes, etc, and it's a real chore.
I swear, if I can't find a stable build somewhere in this fairly recent field of builds, I'm ready to revert all the way back to r36070M which I know works reasonably well with a couple of quirks I can live with. _________________ Routers: Netgear R8000, Linksys E1200v1, E4200, WRT54Gv3, TL-WDR4300v1.7

No. I'm using the non-experimental variety. But that raises another question. Why is it experimental builds always seem to be suggested over what are presumably stable builds? _________________ Routers: Netgear R8000, Linksys E1200v1, E4200, WRT54Gv3, TL-WDR4300v1.7

Okay. I get the difference now between firmware and driver. It's the driver that's experimental. I moved to 44715 experimental. The wireless menus are so different, all my wireless settings got wiped out. When I reentered them again manually, things worked reasonably well again but the router did funky things when I saved changes. So I did a factory reset and reentered all settings manually. Strangely that made matters worse. So I upgraded to 45454 experimental without reset and that seems to be working well. I don't use TurboQAM but the option is available. All channels are there. Only last problem I think might be hardware related. ath0 signal is very low on my laptop. I think that 5GHz transmitter might have gone soft so I disabled it. Got what I paid for. Lol.
Appreciate the help you've given. Thanks a bunch.
