Hi All

Have been using dd-wrt on various routers with old results for many years, and now on the dir-878.

However the wireless is not stable on some builds it drops.
Others the signal will be good but the network connection times or is delayed.
The delays are often after the device has been set down a while but also when being used. Sometimes rarely or several times in a few minutes.

This is on both 2.4 and 5ghz bands, but wired ethernet connections do not have an issue

Have tried many build Such 43813 to 42954 ... and older. All have the same issue

Have tried different channels, disabling noise immunity among other changes

At this point I dd-wrt is too problematic to use, but I’d really like to so hoping for some advice

Thank you

Currently, the release that I consider most stable for DIR-878 is the 04-20-2020-r42954.
Encountered various bugs for many of the releases after r42954, including the recent 07-18-2020-r43845.

I disable Shortcut Forwarding Engine,
For WiFi,
I manually select the Wireless Channel.
I enable Noise Immunity, Short Preamble and AP Isolation.
Due to some users with Apple devices, I have changed the Beacon Interval to 50.

If you have no satisfactory results with dd-wrt
and
You are technically savvy and comfortable with experimental firmware, you can see if you have better results in your situation with OpenWrt.

Good luck.

Beacon intervals should be prime numbers.

Thank you for the info

have tried a crapload of changes. Possibly setting the beacon at 50ms for a short time, but I can't be sure. Yet stock is probably the typical 100ms and works fine.

Apple IOS devices are a bigger pita for sure. Android is slightly better

The issue seems similar to the symptom you report on newer builds, The device is connected but no internet. Sometimes wait several seconds, other times disable and enable, the device radio to get it to on the network again.

It’s like the radio driver or something along the path randomly stops forwarding the data for a time for that device, while other devices connections continue working

Back on stock all is good, signal On both bands is stronger

Trying Openwrt is an option. At least the initial install looks straight forward

Prime numbers for beacon interesting

I have a DIR-882 and got the same issues as you guys described.

I guess the current drivers for MT76xx are not good.

Keep in mind that, according to OpenWrt, LuCI is not included with snapshots.
You may need PuTTY to install LuCI via SSH.

Installed r42954 in my DIR-882. So far it's very godd, 6hrs uptime and counting.

Do you noticed any bugs in this version. like random reboots?

I noticed a very annoying bug in some June releases, I use PPPoE, some times THE WAN connection shows disconnected and loses the IPv4 address (while IPv6 address stills showing), need to restart the router as it can't reconnect.

Not as of yet.

For PPPoE,
Some users consider 03-18-2020-r42729 a better choice.

Good luck.

Would there be any open tickets for the wireless loss of network or the PPOE disconnect issues. If not is there specific debug that needs to be enabled to capture the issues

Using the same hardware same build but results vary

SSH is fine, except for my fat fingers

It looks like newer full releases 18.06 and 19 .07 ship with LuCi installed which is not in the snapshots

I'm using r42954, so far best build I've tested for my DIR-882 (it is probably a good build for DIR-878 considering the hardware similarity).

Testing time: 1 day 8 hours.
Current Uptime: 1 day 8 hours.

None of the issues reported in newer builds:

- Wi-Fi hang/frozen in mobile (Android specific?), link established but no data transmission;
- PPPoE disconnect;
- Random reboots.

What info I need to officially report issues in the newer builds (such as opening ticket)? How do I get this info?

The usual debug information required is dmesg, syslog, and/or serial console log. People need to keep in mind that the MediaTek/Ralink drivers are WIP and that more recent builds are a mac80211 driver, so settings may require adjustment. Some devices would not accept the driver updates, i.e. Buffalo WHR-600D. I don't have the specific list of devices handy. Opening a ticket may or may not get expected results for fixing anything, just an FYI.

The most recent builds still have issues with Apple IOS devices remaining connected to wireless but losing network access (no errors in logs)

With OpenWRT installed Wireless works well for all devices.

Snapshots are a bit more work to setup add packages and maintain, but worth it since Wireless works

Cheers

For those who installed OpenWRT on Dir 878, how is wireless speed compared to DD-WRT ?

I remember that early this year, I installed DD-WRT on my Dir 878 and wifi speeds were ridiculous slow compared to stock firmware, so I reverted back to stock and forgot about custom firmwares for a while.

Is this speed issue already fixed in DD-WRT ?

Just for your information, I used inSSider to measure speeds and I found that:

- Stock Firmwre: 2.4Ghz - 700mbps / 5Ghz - 1733.3 mbps
- DD-WRT (Jan/2020): 2.4Ghz - 300 mbps / 5Ghz - 800 mbps

At that time when I performed the measurements, I had the impression that on DD-WRT not all four streams were active. Is this fixed ?

Hi everyone,

Just to share my experience with DIR-882 running r44715 (HT40, VHT80) i get: 2.4Ghz - 720 mbps / 5Ghz - 1733,3 mbps. I also made some throughput testing with Tamos tool:

I also made a test with VHT160 but it seems that performance went down:

Any explanation on UDP high loss rate ?
