Yes, I've done my fair share of reading on this already and I read that I DO NOT want to use a version from the database. So I see here that there are pages of betas and I have no idea which version to use that would be most stable for my RT-AC68U. This is the T-Mobile hotspot version and it's already flashed with ASUS Merlin when I bought it on eBay.

I used to roll DD-WRT back then on a very reliable Linksys WRT54GL. It still runs to this day believe it or not.

I'm thinking that because the router is already flashed with ASUS Merlin, I don't need to flash with a trx version first, just go straight bin?

I see the 30-30-30 rule has changed since I did this long ago. I read about using the WPS button.

My primary goal here is to have better VLAN capability to throw all of my IoT crap into its own VLAN over WiFi if that's even possible through the frontend GUI of the router using DD-WRT. In ASUS Merlin (at least my version) VLAN capability is only though telnet and a ton of commands which I'm not willing to mess with. I remember seeing VLAN capability back when I had used DD-WRT sometime circa 2006, but never knew what it was or used it.

Can you actually put an OpenVPN server in a VLAN and then have another OpenVPN server outside of a VLAN?

Anyway, if anyone is rolling with a RT-AC68U and knows what beta or stable I should use with this that'd be great.

Thanks.

The most recent build (45229) seems to work very well.

Yeah, I saw that build, but I also noticed it had some reported issues and in the OP mentions some 5GHz channels may be missing which requires a few telnet/SSH commands.

I see in your signature you're running a couple different versions. What is the reason for that and should I use one of those versions instead?

I’ve now uppgraded one of the other routers too. They are in other locations and I don’t have access frequently.
I’m not aware of any issues except the one with lower channels on the 5 GHz band.
Have not have any impact for me.

I have 2x AC68U of differing hardware revisions, running DD-WRT v3.0-r30700M kongac (09/27/16). Vlan support has been flawless. You just need to know what you are doing with dd-wrt as there are some quirks where terminology differs from commercial router and firewall environments. Basically, every VLAN needs to be paired with a bridge interface and that's necessary both from a layer 2 and layer 3 perspective, in my experience. I mention layer 2 in the event you are multi AP. Last but not least and very important, if you change versions, you need to properly clear NVRAM as there are artifacts that linger, and result in major head scratcher situations otherwise. Always start any version with totally clean router in my experience.

I'm browsing this thread in order to cherry pick for an updated version for testing on a third AS68U I picked up. So, I'll take a look at 45229. Not sure yet whose build this thread is, but am sure will discover this shortly as I continue to read.

My signature might be outdated, so take it with a pinch of salt.

I see from your sig, you are now at 48081. I will take a look at this, as I cherry pick a more current version to test.

Hello,

i'm looking for a most stable firmware for my RT-AC68U.

I came from asus_rt-ac68u-firmware_r48425 witch i used the last year without any problems.
But i did a updated to asus_rt-ac68u-firmware_r51440 and now i have random Wifi connection drops on my clients.

Is there a newer build to recommend?

The last 51530...as always.. but...did you do nvram erase and manually rebuild your settings from scratch..? Rolling Eyes if not now we talking... Laughing
Currently there is a heavy WIP on ipv6...and some other stuff check SVN line https://svn.dd-wrt.com/
Also to define stable: It could be stable for someone and unstable for someone else..due to setting and services used...like bad settings, bad clients, bad services use, or services that are WIP..than stable does not apply...the way you may believe..not even stock firmwares are stable as those even see no updates for ages sometimes not at all..

No idea what your wifi settings are, but lets say my R7000(also Broadcom radio based) is rock solid with its WiFi and always has been, but...my wifi settings are correct..
What are yours...this is a million $'s question..??

Post pic of your Wifi settings..and advanced WiFi settings...to help us, diagnose your issues..!!

You can try to increase WiFi secure key renewal interval (wifi security settings page) form 3600 to 7200 or even more ...its not a good practice, but for some dropping clients, it does work better..

I've settled on r51306 1/15/2023 for now. Newer builds than that seemed a bit unstable for me.

I'm running this build after trying a few newer builds. I have a VPN and my speeds are good now. I do test newer builds from time to time.

There is no .bin file for this router, only a .trx ... rather interesting nobody even addressed this. <wowzers>
