I know dragonslayer moved to Entware, Optware, or OTRW2 and don't really know what the new coders recommend.

Welcome to the forum.
40599 is an old an crappy build.
To get the best out of DDWRT and the forum, read and follow the forum guidelines:

Please carefully read and follow the forum guidelines (see point 8 ).
Others will also chime in to give more advice on what build to use, Marvell routers are picky
There is an Entware wiki: https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Installing_Entware _________________ Routers:Netgear R7000, R6400v1, R6400v2, EA6900 (XvortexCFE), E2000, E1200v1, WRT54GS v1.

Cautious choice these days is 44048: https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=326070
Watch the recent new-build threads in the marvell forum though: https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=58&topicdays=0&start=0
Builds after 44048 have gone through a phase of struggling with wifi issues (Marvell routers), but things appear to be getting better. _________________2x Netgear XR500 and 3x Linksys WRT1900ACSv2 on 53544: VLANs, VAPs, NAS, station mode, OpenVPN client (AirVPN), wireguard server (AirVPN port forward) and clients (AzireVPN, AirVPN, private), 3 DNSCrypt providers via VPN.
