A while I ago I asked for a recommendation on a router. It soon became apparent that the R7800 is kind of the go-to router around here.

Moving over to a bigger house I find myself in need of Access Points. I was kinda hoping to get the same help in picking APs as I did picking a router.

I'm initially looking to place an AP on the 1st floor where it has to provide WiFi to 4 bedrooms and a bathroom. The bedrooms are approx. 5m by 5m and all end in a 6m by 1.1m hallway. After renovating the ground floor early 2021 I intend to put one or two APs on the ground floor as well.

When Googling things like "best Access Points" pretty much everything points to Ubiquiti AC Lite and AC Pro. I was inclined to go with a Ubiquiti Switch 8 60W (future proofing) and either of those APs but digging some further through the Ubiquiti community I read a lot of negative feedback on their QC and an overall lack of responsiveness in dealing with user reported issues.

What's the verdict in this corner of the internet? It doesn't have to be a DD-WRT capable router used as AP, I'm fine with native AP firmware so long as I don't end up with mediocre consumer stuff and so long as I can drive it with my R7800 for the near future.

Thanks!

EX7300v2 has Ethernet and an AP mode. It uses QCA9984 radio for 5 GHz, same as R7800.

Factory firmware updated yesterday.

There is also EX8000 with an Access Point mode.

EX7500 does not have an Ethernet port (second 5GHz radio is the backhaul).

These look like they all need to go in the wall power outlet. My power outlets are all 30cm from the floor.

I'm actually hoping for something with a little more pleasing looks that I can mount on a ceiling using PoE. Don't care what the router looks like, but these will go in rooms where they're fully visible.

It runs a patched OpenWrt; if you need DD-WRT (activation required) use older model CF-E380AC with QCA9980.

Don't know why CF-E385AC is unsupported. I'm guessing BS does not have the model in hand to work his magic.

QCA9980 is fine however, used here every day with EA8500.

If I would go for CF-E380AC, would I install DD-WRT on the access point itself or does the controlling software/firmware have to be installed elsewhere, like on the router or any server?

You would install DD-WRT on it and have direct control over the AP. Keep in mind this one requires activation.

Thanks for helping me out here. So it's either going to be a Comfast with DD-WRT on it, or a Ubiquiti with it's own Unifi FW and a 3rd device to host the FW/controller on. Either, both require activitation.
