Router Model: Asus RT-AC66U
Firmware Version: DD-WRT v3.0-r43028 giga (04/29/20)
pfSense as router 2.4.5

I run this device in "Router" mode with WAN disabled, gateway upstream at 192.168.1.1, local DNS 0.0.0.0, DHCP disabled, DNSMasq disabled, keep alive disabled.

With this config, I would have figured that all my DNS calls would go through my DNS resolver (pfsense), but in my logs I'm seeing that my DD-WRT router is calling 1.1.1.1:53 every hour.

Is this supposed to happen / how can I disable it?

It may be the router polling your NTP server for time and resolving the hostname. Just a guess.

That feels like a fair guess. I'll setup an NTP server and point DD-WRT to it to see what happens.

I dug into the logs, DD-WRT has been calling this for NTP.

Code:
daemon.info process_monitor[719]: cyclic NTP Update success (servers 2.pool.ntp.org 212.18.3.19 88.99.174.22)

I've reset ntp server as pfsense ntp, we'll see what happens.

Assign an IP for the NTP server and not a hostname and bypass DNS.
