You may get lucky timing with a used EA8500 (if you are comfortable with a serial flash) on eBay, offerup, craigslist, mercari or other for sale classifieds etc. Otherwise go with R7800 for 60-80 USD.

Thanks for reply, definitely not comfortable with serial
The original question that was asked...what are some options for good routers to use with DD-WRT. That can't be the ONLY one that people would recommend. There are no other good options?
Plus, I usually don't trust deals that seem too good to be true. If a new item costs $250 and one person is selling it used for $180 and another is selling it used for only $75, my first question is, "What's wrong with the one that costs only $75?" There has to be something wrong with it, otherwise they'd be charging $180 for it. But maybe that's just me. I never really bought into the whole ebay thing. I've only ever gotten crap when I've tried to buy used stuff there, especially electronics.

i have a brand new NETGEAR R7800 (UK PSU) I could sell it to you, for 200$ + shipment nothing is bad with it, never used still in the box with DDWRT on it...just for the record i ve found it for less than 80 pounds so the magic is possible... have a deep look on Ebay/amazon they both have a return policy so...you have a spare move... In all my trade history of ebay, i ve never both a faulty unit...but if you are paranoic, than don't buy anything from internet, than 'cheep' will not be your best friend...(word), as the price in the shop for those Routers as new is banana... _________________ Atheros

fritzbox 7590 190€
Ubiquiti UniFi AC HD 270€
Turris Omnia 300€
various ax routers:
Netgear Nighthawk AX12 350€
ASUS RT-AX89X 380€?
but like blkt said, in the forum there are tons of threads with router recommendations
and hundreds of different routers are supported by dd-wrt
but the r7800 offers a pretty good overall package
is a good, pretty worry-free router
if you want it to be as cheap as possible, you can also buy a WRT54, it also runs with dd-wrt, but it's questionable whether you will have a lot of fun with it
I would not get less than a R7000. For any beginner going to DD-WRT I will always recommend the Netgear R7000 it's simpler to configure and can handle +300Mbps NAT and has great WIFI range too. I have one (off-site2 in signature) in a large 3 floor home the top 2 floors are wood frame the 3rd is underground with concrete with all floors getting WIFI. The R7000 is on the top floor. _________________ Home Network on Telus 1Gb PureFibre - 10GbE Copper Backbone

Since Covid-19, everyone has discovered how shitty their home wifi is and routers and their availability in the used market are scarce....
That said, The Archer A7v5/C7v5 is a good cheap router that will run solid up to 150mbps with Q.o.S.
If you want better mbps Q.o.S (up to 450mbps), then you need to move to a R7800 or R9000...
If you want to run a VPN client on the router...Then R7800 or R9000 are the only way to go that have decent CPU performance...
You can also look for a used R7000, which is BCM based, and has decent performance like the A7v5 series...again not a contender if you plan to run a VPN.
Those are likely the best value routers you can find...
In the UK, I have no idea what you'll find on Ebay...
Thank you covid-19.... _________________ FORUM RULES
For any beginner going to DD-WRT I will always recommend the Netgear R7000
I can ditto this... the R7000 has always been my go-to for one that just works. Further to this, the original R6700 (not R6700v2 or v3) is hardware identical to the R7000. I lucked out just today and found one for $40USD on eBay. Sorry, bought it, but they do come up. Be careful, though, often people will sell a R6700v2 or R6700v3 without adding the "v2" or "v3" because they know the original v1 is sought after. Make sure you inquire with the seller and even send them a photo of an original R6700 sticker (attached).
One of the problems in getting a used router is that the eBay scene is wise to the fact that routers that work well with dd-wrt are in demand and worth more.
