I have a local dns server on a different subnet than my ddwrt router. I've set Static DNS1 to be the IP of this dns server. When I have 'Use dnsmasq for DNS' unticked on the 'Setup->Basic Setup' page, I cannot resolve any addresses when I'm connected to my ddwrt router. If I check the 'Use dnsmasq for DNS' it works and I see requests to my local dns server for resolving addresses.

When I view the 'Services' tab, the 'Dnsmasq' enabled button is always ticked, whether I have it ticked on the Basic Setup page or not.

So..

1) why do I need to have 'Use dnsmasq for DNS' ticked at all for resolving to work? Can't I just have the Static DNS1 IP in the DHCP section and that should be it? Or does this option really mean: 'Turn on DNS and use dnsmasq as the daemon for DNS'.

2) Why is 'Services->dnsmasq' radio button ticked and is that option in the services page for dhcp? If so, should it describe it a little better on Services page..?

u said the dns server is on a different subnet, the static dns on setup page is wan dns from the perspective of the ddwrt router. so the ddwrt router needs to forward requests to that ip, if dnsmasq is not running, it cant forward, no dns resolution.

unbound could also work but is probably more complicated for ur case for no reason since u dont seem to want recursive dns.
