I will suggest you to check minimum smb protocol to 2.02, it works perfectly fine with Windows 10 & debian linux.

I am running firmware build 43813 fine with Samba, no optware or entware installed.

Router/Version: Netgear R7800
File/Kernel: Linux 4.9.230-rc1 #600 SMP
DD-WRT Version:DD-WRT v3.0-r43813 std (07/15/20)
Previous/Reset: No reset
Mode/Status: Running
Issues/Errors: none - intermittent internet drops seem resolved

I had all kinds of issues trying to use the router USB port on drives.

Most issues were resolved on update to Windows 10 ver. 2004

I still had trouble with certain software saving files, notably Notepad.

I then updated DD-WRT to r43813 July 15, 2020 and it seems to be working fine now with a mapped ext3 formatted USB thumb drive.

Hope this helps someone.

Next test will be a USB connected hard drive on the second USB port, and various drive formats.

Thanks to BS and other experts here for their excellent support.

Router/Version: Linksys WRT160NL
File/Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r43813 std (07/15/20)
Kernel: Linux 3.10.108-d10 #52430 Wed Jul 15 02:38:10 +04 2020 mips
Previous/Reset: Factory, yes
Mode/Status: Running as AP with WPA2-AES, all standard services and settings except USB storage enabled and basic wireless settings.
Issues/Errors:
Samba issues while using attached USB drives. I attached a 4TB NTFS-formatted hard drive, set up some public shared folders for Samba just fine. They showed up when I connected using Windows 7, but trying to transfer a file or read a file results in the router slowing to a crawl and eventually resetting itself. Before this happens, the status page gives a recent load average above 4, and free memory below 10%.

I tried reducing the maximum ports to 4096 and the TCP timeout to 1200, which reduced memory usage but the issue with slowing down and resetting remains. I also tried switching to a FAT32-formatted 16GB flash drive since the first post mentions some possible NTFS-related issues, but exactly the same behaviour was observed.

Without a USB drive attached, load average is low, RAM is about 20% free, and it all seems to be fine so far.

Setup Using: 2.4 GHz, 5.0 GHz, IPv4, DNSMasq, USB storage (entware), USB UPS monitoring (NUT via entware)
Status: works fine so far

Yes, my router was very out of date. Only strangeness was that issuing the 'write' command via SSH shell on r35927 caused sshd to stop running, just had to make sure it was done writing before rebooting. Was my first time flashing using that method too.

Installed YAMon v4.0.7 after the upgrade, no problems.

R7800

All good. One minor UI issue related to the MTU setting - this may have been in the ui forever i just never had a reason to change the setting.

It seems you cant change the auto/manual and teh mtu size in the same save. you have to first flip the mode, save then change mtu/ save, then apply.

if reverting back to auto you must flip MTU back to 1500 first, save then go to auto or ui will stick with old size setting.

Not huge deal, just a 2 step thing which should be able to done in one pass.

Router : TP Link WR941NDv6
Upgrade : from r40750
Reset : No
Mode : Router / AP with SFE

Radio Scheduling on WebUI not working, if scheduled Radio off the Radio is back ON after reboot. This seems broken on all builds from 2020 for my Router I have tested. Should be checked on other devices.
