I'm looking into purchasing a few DD-WRT-capable routers and setting up a mesh network to replace my aging Deco M5s. It seems that WDS is the preferred configuration of choice for this.

I'm very comfortable with a Linux environment and using the command line. However, I have almost no networking experience (I have never used DD-WRT before). I hope to change that last part through this experience.

Feel free to address these questions out of order or only address what you can answer.

Question 1:
A WDS network operates much like how consumer mesh routers (like the Google Wifi, Netgear Orbi, TP-Link Deco, etc) operate, correct? I'm hoping that all devices are on a single vlan/subnet and can talk to eachother transparently as if they were connected to a single traditional router, regardless of which mesh node they are really connected to.

Question 2:
Can I connect two WDS nodes via an Ethernet cable? If the WDS protocol will not work for this, how else can I do it? I essentially have one node which is a decent distance from the remaining nodes, however I already have an Ethernet cable between it and the main central node. My hope is that this connection is transparent to the WDS protocol and it can still be used as a hop for future nodes, should I choose to install any.

Question 3:
With WDS, can I create a guest network with a different SSID and a seperate VLAN/subnet, so that guest devices can not talk to devices on the main network? I can't find information about combining guest networks with WDS anywhere online.

Thanks for all the help! Please let me know if you need any information for me.
