Our router (Dlink-DIR-632A) is still using v24-sp2 (build 26635, since 2015), and everything seems Ok.

However, I'm certain, there have been vulnerabilities found in five years. Checking the router database yields the recommendation to upgrade to v3.0 [beta] build 40559, from August 2019.

However, simply browsing the download site, I find a today's beta.

Is one beta better than the other? Is the older version recommended by the database more tested, or is the database simply out of date?

Is there, perhaps, an updated code-branch continuing the v24-lineage (with security updates, but no new features)?

The only feature I'd like exploring is creating a VPN-tunnel with another apartment -- which is using a Verizon-provided FiOS "Quantum" router, if possible.

Ah, the typical reaction to a noob asking questions...

Except I know the answer you gave -- and talk about it in my posting. Would've been much nicer, if you explained the relationship between the beta recommended by the downloads link and the very latest available.

The point 1 (1.c) advises to scroll up to "Downloads", which continues to point to the "Router Database" -- the one, point 8 tells to not use, indeed...

If you clicked on the red "Where Do I..." that you screenshot, followed the directions to scroll up to the section heading... this would've greeted you. Arguing a point of redundancy is not a good idea. It's also not a good idea to shortcut things and horn in on a broken novelty (the downloads link).

P.S. we need to edit that wiki, because the only places folks should be going unless the specific initial flash is still in the router database is the main downloads sites or linked firmware images. This leads to (more) confusion, otherwise.
