Good Morning:

I will admit I'm a newbie so I apologize if I've posted to the wrong board. I did search and this seems to be the place.

My question is simple. Currently, on my Asus RT-AC87U, I'm using Merlin. Because of VPN requirements with Cyberghost, I believe I need to flash to DD-WRT. Are there any issues with flashing to DD-WRT? I'm trying to prevent bricking my router.

Thank you for your kind help.

In my opinion these are the steps:

Flash the asus stock firmware
Flash DD-WRT

According to the wiki: https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices

"Use ASUS Firmware Restoration Tool for ASUS router initial flash (*.TRX file)"
https://www.asus.com/uk/Networking/RTAC87U/HelpDesk_Download/

Good Luck!

Merlin is just modified stock firmware, so no need to flash back to original 'AsusWRT', but a reset is recommended first if you've enabled a lot of services (and reset after flashing of course). But flashing to OEM before DD is highly recommended when running Tomato-based or OpenWRT firmware.
