Before I set up a syslog server, the only reason I wish to do this is to be able to grep the syslog for events where the router (mine linksys e3000) hands a device an ip address via DHCP. I looked for sample messages by searching but I didn't find anything.

edit: searched further and it seems both possible and not possible based on what I found, the possible one involves dnsmasq and dhcp scripting which is certainly over my head.

Perhaps it's time for a new build. Recent builds are logging lots of DHCP events in the syslog that older builds omitted.

You won't see dhcp logging on an E3000. It doesn't have enough hardware memory. My E4200v1 doesn't have any logging last I checked. I wasn't going to comment since the information is already posted in the forum...

Thanks for the replies. I lucked out, since I use a Unifi Access Point for Wifi. It has config for a remote syslog server and sends exactly "MACAddress associated" "MACAddress disassociated". Now I can detect those pesky not pingable/arp-able iphones leaving and arriving home.
