So I had bought a refurbished archer c7 v5 The amazon version I set it up as a repeater but was only getting half the internet speed output on the 2ghz band I tried everything and couldn’t fix this, so I ended up returning it and got a c7 v2 but now I’m having the same issue, I previously had a c7 v2 that worked perfectly but I gave it to a friend, So my question is do routers loose speed over time and is the archer c7 prone to issues? And are refurbished routers not reliable? The issue seems to be the output on the 2ghz band on the archer c7 because I worked around the issue by connecting a TL-WR841N to it wired and it’s outputting on 2ghz and now the speed is back to normal that way. So the setup is archer c7 v2 as a client on the 5ghz band receiving the internet, with the TL-WR841N connected through Ethernet to the c7 to then output the internet.

Check you WIFI settings first see here; pay special attention to channel and channel width settings

If used as a repeater it halves the speed.

Let's say you use the 2,4 GHz set up as repeater, the signal is send to the upstream router and after it has received from the router it is going it to send to the client on the same 2.4 GHz.
When it does so it cannot communicate with the upstream router so halving the bandwidth (this is a simplification).

If you have a dual band router you can setup as a client then you dedicate one radio for the back-haul and the other for communicating with clients

Routers do not lose speed over time it is just a matter of setting up the right way and choosing settings the right way, for Atheros see the settings of MSOEngineer:

Check your 2.4 Ghz settings,

Take a look here

https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=323389&highlight=archer

Set wireless network mode to NG-Mixed and check

"Short GI" disabled (for stability) enabled (for speed)
"Short Preamble" enabled (for speed)
"WMM support" enabled

"Short Preamble" improves the transmit/receive handling and -> speed and should work with a,g or n clients, "Short Guard" enabled should improve WLAN reception with only N, AC clients used / connected. If you don't use very old bg only wifi clients, and you do not have connection/stability issues, keep it enabled.

Used build in the post is r42602
Try "Channel Width" WIDE HT40, on my device MIXED did not work as expected, WITH HT40 still 20Mhz connects are possible.

Investigate channels with a tool on your laptop like inSSID (use last free version) the channel with the highest link score should be a preferred one.

Coming up problems with the forum on my laptop, https certificate seem expired today...
